Victoria Fernandes, a former deputy Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, died in the wee hours on Saturday … Fernandes had represented St Cruz Assembly segment in North Goa for four terms from 1994 till 2012 on tickets of regional parties and also as a Congress nominee…  For further details click here

3rd September 2019, Croydon, Surrey, UK. ROSA FERNANDES, AKA: IRENE ROSA FERNANDES/MASCARENHAS, aged 73. Ex Ribeiro High School, Nairobi. The Mascarenhas family announces with great sadness the passing away of their mother and grandmother. Irene Rosa was a devoted wife to the late Philip (Caetano Filipe Antonio) Mascarenhas, Ex Mombasa. Beloved mother to Joaquim Mascarenhas (Roselee) & Desmond Mascarenhas (Ewelina Pyrek). Grandmother of Daniel and Zara, and Bobby our precious Parrot. Irene Rosa daughter of late Domingos Pedro Fernandes and late Ana Maria Antonia Fernandes. Kenya: Double tragedy for de Souza family - Venerable tourism dynasty

7 Sep: Coastweek (Kenya). On April 23 this year, Goans around the world mourned the passing of one its leading lights, the tourism businessman Lewis de Souza who was founder and chairman of Visit Africa Safaris, reports Cyprian Fernandes… On August 29, the family was struck with a shocking double tragedy when his widow, Antoinette, suddenly passed away while on short holiday in Zanzibar … They are survived by their only daughter Heather-Gail who is left to carry on the mantle. Monsignor William Nazareth [born in Uganda] who founded Catholic marriage tribunal turns 100 years old on Sept 8

7 Sep: Times of India. Likely the oldest living priest in the Catholic clergy, Monsignor William Nazareth, turns 100 years old on September 8. Msgr Willie, an expert in canon law, founded the marriage tribunal in the Church and has presided over the maximum number of annulments. A private celebration is scheduled to take place at the Archbishop's House in Colaba [Mumbai] where he lives Sunday evening… Oswald Cardinal Gracias, archbishop of Bombay and the head of the Catholic Church in India, will preside over the function… Fr Willie was born in Uganda September 8, 1919, and his family moved to Goa when he was two and a half years old… Msgr Willie's health is failing although there are moments of lucidity now and then. The turning point was the brutal murder of his brother and sister at their home in Goa nearly 20 years ago. They were both burnt alive during a robbery attempt…  click here

Navy extends hrs of runway closure, international charters worry

6 Sep: Times of India. The Navy's decision to extend the closure of the lone runway at the Goa International Airport by an hour for maintenance work once a week, is likely to affect the schedules of several international airlines during the upcoming tourist season. The Navy has informed travel operators that effective from November 2, runway 8/ 26 will be closed for all operations between 7.30 am and 12.30 pm every Saturday, for maintenance… the new closure schedule is likely to extend from November to May, which is the entire span of Goa’s tourist season … Most international flights are allowed slots to land only during the early hours of the morning and during the weekends, while afternoon slots are reserved for domestic flights… Since 1994 a charter arrives from the UK thrice a week, including one on Saturday at 11.30 am…  click here
