Now that perpetual shock has become par for the course in British politics, it’s easy to forget the sensation in Westminster when John McDonnell was appointed shadow chancellor in 2015… McDonnell’s reputation as a lifelong Marxist and revolutionary firebrand was matched only by his notoriety as a hard man of the left… The son of a trade-unionist bus driver, McDonnell was born into an Irish Catholic family in Liverpool, and flirted briefly with the priesthood in his teens, before leaving school to do a series of unskilled jobs. In his twenties he took A-levels at night school, moved to Hayes and studied politics as a mature student, before working for trade unions and in local government. Swindon Magistrates' Court: In The Dock: Clive Gonsalves

23 Nov: Swindon Advertiser. … Clive Gonsalves, 33, of Carstairs Avenue, pleaded guilty to damaging a custody cell at Gablecross police station, abusive behaviour and being drunk and disorderly in Villett Street. He was sentenced to a 12-month community order, with a six month alcohol rehabilitation requirement. Magistrates fined him £100 and ordered he pay £35 compensation to Wiltshire Police. He must pay £85 costs and a £90 victim surcharge.  click here
3 May 2019: Swindon Advertiser. Clive Gonsalves of Carstairs Avenue was told he must pay more than £600 after he set fire to a duvet and a bed runner belonging to the Goddard Arms. Gonsalves pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage and was fined £215 with £294 compensation, a £30 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.  click here

Rabi Martins: Watford Wellness addresses mental health issues in businesses

23 Nov: Harrow Times (UK). Watford Town Centre Chaplaincy have been leading Watford Wellness meetings in response to requests from Councillor Rabi Martins and Chris Luff of the Watford Chamber of Commerce who wished that more is done to help improve the mental wellbeing of Watford business staff members. Cong, BJP join hands in Goa civic body poll

23 Nov: The Times of India (New Delhi edition. In a bizarre political drama, Goa Forward Party, a constituent of NDA at the Centre, retained the post of Margao Municipal Council chairperson by defeating by one vote the candidate who was jointly put up by rivals Congress and BJP. In the 25-member council, GFP has 11councillors, BJP seven and Congress six. Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai-led GFP has been controlling MMC. In a straight fight between GFP candidate Poona Naik and Congress’ Dorris Texeira, who was supported by BJP, Sardesai managed to wean away two BJP councillors to vote for Naik…  click here

Agreement signed to boost Qatar’s trade ties with Goa

22 Nov: Qatar Tribune. In a bid to promote trade between Qatar and the Indian state of Goa, Indian Business and Professionals Council (IBPC) in Qatar and Goa Chamber of Commerce signed an agreement on the sidelines of Vibrant Goa Expo and Summit 2019 held in Taleigao recently. The agreement, which was signed by IBPC President Azim Abbas, is aimed at enhancing mutual cooperation and support in the field of business and trade between Qatar and Goa…  click here

This tiny coastal state was under Portuguese rule until 1961, decades after the rest of the country received independence.
