20th May 2020: Leicester U.K. JOSEPH RATTOS Died peacefully aged 73 years after a long illness. Beloved brother to Joanita, Bridget, Julie, Xavier, Henry, Louisa, Elvina, and Priscilla. Joseph attended St Theresa’s boy’s school in Nairobi Kenya, before moving to the U.K. The family would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, prayers, and condolences at this difficult time. 22 May: Navhind Times. The Centre has decided to restart public transport in a limited way… While it would help thousands of people stuck up in various parts of the country to reach home, fears have been expressed that these people returning home could bring the virus and infect others… Goa has seen a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases over the last week, with 44 new cases having been reported all of which were imported by people who came back to the state from other parts of the country or from abroad, an overwhelming majority of them being Goans. With limited medical and critical care facilities Goa cannot afford a spurt in coronavirus cases… Only persons of Goan origin should be allowed to come to the state from other states or other countries … The state has to keep its gates closed for all others, until the coronavirus has been contained within its boundaries and other parts of the world. 732 words.  click here

Doctor who raised concerns over PPE shortage admitted to mental hospital

21 May: BBC. An Indian doctor who was suspended after raising concerns about a shortage of masks is again in the spotlight after officials committed him to a mental hospital. Dr Sudhakar Rao, an anaesthetist with 20 years of experience, made national headlines over the weekend for the second time in two months. The videos show a confusing chain of events from Saturday. Dr Rao is first seen shirtless, sitting inside his car by the side of the road, and screaming at police. In another video, he is lying on the road with his hands tied behind his back as a constable hits him with a baton… In what is likely to be the last video, officers bundle the doctor into an auto rickshaw in front of bewildered onlookers… On 3 April, Dr Rao, who works at a government hospital, told media that doctors weren't being given adequate protective gowns and masks… 845 words  click here

Vogue Warriors: Meet the sisterhood of essential workers at this Goa supermarket

21 May: Vogue. At Goa’s AJ supermarket, an all-female team has been working through the lockdown, even as they fight panic buying during the pandemic … “I’ve never seen our stock disappear so fast,” recalls Pramila Subhash Palyekar (25), who has been working as the cashier at AJ, a women-run supermarket in Goa’s Siolim, for a year now. “We usually close at 8pm, but at that time there were so many people that even after the shutters were down, we had people inside till 9pm,” she adds… Things only got busier when on April 1, supermarkets like AJ reopened… “Only five customers were allowed at one time, and with a time limit of 10 minutes inside the store,” says the store manager, Gayatri Vishal Shirodkar (33)… 1139 words.  click here
