Critically endangered species for dinner

6 Jun: DNES (Czechoslovakia). By Miroslav Bobek, Director of the Prague Zoo. It was before the "covid-19". On vacation in Palolem, Goa, we went for a walk on the beach after dinner. Fish vendors stood by their simple stalls. I was surprised to see two barely forty-centimetre baby sharks on one of the trays. I've been sensitive to sharks for some time … the number of human shark victims per year is no more that the sharks killed by man in a single hour… the beach vendors offered much more than baby sharks and among them was the hammerhead shark in the photo. It is a bronze hammerhead, which grows to a length of over four meters and has been included in the global Red List of Threatened Species for many years and is ranked it in the highest category, critically endangered species. At the beach in Palolem, the local vendors offered it to us for dinner… And not enough: in the following days, I saw several more critically endangered sharks at various vendors… We will open our zoo on Monday, on the occasion of World Oceans Day, and during it we will pay full attention to sharks and other endangered fish… 406 words.  click here
