Obituary

Death: Jasmine Fernandes (London) ex Dar es Salaam & St Mary’s Convent, Goa

29 August 2020: London. JASMINE FERNANDES Aged 64. Passed away peacefully after losing her battle with cancer. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Sabina Fernandes (Oxford) sister to Janice Lee (San Antonio Texas), Jason and Joslyn. She is survived by her daughters Severita, Sabrina and Shantelle and 5 grandchildren. Jasmine will be missed by all her family and those who were fortunate to have known her. She was a kind and generous person with a heart of gold. May her soul rest in peace. Death: Ethel A. Souza
Ethel A. Souza passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on September 2, 2020 in a suburb of Washington, DC. Predeceased by her husband Jerome and daughter Joyce, Ethel is survived by her daughter Janette (David). She leaves behind three grandchildren – Jeremy, Lauren (Alex), and Jaclyn – and a great-grandchild, Cameron. Ethel was the daughter of Severino and Generosa Albuquerque of Mapusa, Goa, sister to Anciet, Victor, and Marshal and sister-in-law to Alex, Lucy, Father Anthony, Sister Felicita, and Father Benedict. Ethel lived on four continents during her lifetime: Mombasa, Kenya, London, UK, and later the USA to stay with her daughter Janette and family until her passing. Inquest hears Swindon men died after getting into difficulties swimming hear Bath

8 Sep: Swindon Advertiser. Two friends died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the River Avon, an inquest has heard. Swindon men Velly Souza, 25, and Samuel Fernandes, 20, were pulled from the water in Bath, Somerset, on May 28. Avon Coroner's Court heard that the men had been visiting the area with four friends. Five members of the group entered the water, which the inquest heard was deep and cold despite it being a hot day. Witnesses described hearing shouting before Mr Souza and Mr Fernandes were seen to disappear underwater. Others at the weir attempted to rescue the men, from Goa, as well as a third man, who was helped to safety with a float. The Court also heard from their friends, Ronel Siqueria and Feema Da Cunha … Post-mortem examinations by Home Office pathologist Dr Russell Delaney concluded that both men had died from drowning. Dr Delaney confirmed that neither of the men had consumed alcohol or drugs before their deaths… 512 words.  click here

Canada: Mervin Mascarenhas: The Man Behind The Pen

When can I travel to India? Tourism ‘may not return until April 2021’

Here’s everything you need to know about who can travel to India right now – and when tourism might restart… Travel to, from and within India was suspended in March, when the country implemented a strict lockdown. Now things are starting to open up again. But as one of the countries most affected by this year’s events, the rules on travel to and from India right now are complicated – and, in some cases, pretty unclear. Here’s what you need to know… Are there flights to India right now? … Can I travel to India? … Those holding Overseas Citizenship of India (and their close relatives) are also allowed to travel to India … The bad news for non-Indian citizens (and those without OCI status) is that the rules are much stricter… Is there a quarantine to enter India? … Can I travel domestically within India? … When will I be able to travel to India from overseas? Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like this will happen before the end of the year – or even beyond. Air India London to Goa flight lands with 150 Indians

8 Sep: Times of India. Around 150 Indians who were stranded in London returned home on Monday aboard a Vande Bharat repatriation flight that landed at Goa International Airport. The flight, operated by Air India, is the 13th Vande Bharat flight and the second under the travel arrangement that India has made with the UK. The return flight took off from Goa airport later with 93 adults and two passengers… Goa airport director Gagan Malik said that the Union ministry of civil aviation and Airports Authority of India have received proposals from several airlines to operate flights to Goa as part of the air bubble created…  click here

Unruly tourists go wild on North Goa beaches

8 Sep: Navhind Times. The tourists are creating nuisance on the beaches and at car parking lots, the villagers said, alleging that some of the tourists are defecating at open spaces despite the existence of public toilets. It appears that the visitors are law unto themselves, as there is no police deployment on the beaches, the locals maintained… However, tourist police PI Souraj Divkar said the tourist policemen have not yet been deployed on the beaches, as they have been shifted to the Mapusa police station for COVID-related duty… Souraj Naik, a car parking lot contractor, said the vehicles carrying tourists are coming mostly from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh…  click here

Migrants to seamen, illegal arms just a contact away

8 Sep: Times of India. … The illegal gun trade in Goa is one of the worst kept secrets. It operates mainly through middlemen, who place orders to the (illegal) dealers, who in turn supply the arms to them for delivering the consignment to the clients. “The dealers, most of the times, do not even know who their clients are. Everything lies with the middlemen, and they are the ones who bear the loss or face the consequences in case of a botched-up transaction,” a police officer said… If a seaman has adequate knowledge of guns, he can easily procure it from the grey market overseas and find resourceful ways to send it across to you… women are also used as a trade-in to buy illegal arms, thereby suggesting that gun trafficking also facilitates flesh trade…  click here
