Obituary

Death: Tony Da Costa. Ex Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

4 May 2021. San Diego, CA TONY DA COSTA. Ex Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Passed away at the age of 87, with his family by his side. Tony is survived by his loving wife Thelma, son Dirk & wife Maggie, son Trevor. Grandchildren, Dane, Morgan, Jillian, Cassius, and Great Grandson, Damian. Tony will be fondly remembered and missed by family and friends for his positive attitude, witty humor throughout his life, and during his last days. Family & Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral services which will be live streamed and saved on the church website for a week. UK: COVID Indian Variant

The rapid spread of the Indian coronavirus variant could lead to the return of local lockdowns in England, government ministers have acknowledged… Health secretary Matt Hancock has said there have been 2,323 confirmed cases of the variant of concern in the UK – with cases doubling in some parts of the country over the last week… There has been a 44 per cent increase in the number of areas in England detecting the Indian variant over the past week. UK: Goan family from Divar celebrates Foxes’ FA Cup Triumph

18 May: Herald. Leicester City’s surprise victory against Chelsea, clinching their first ever FA Cup in their history stunned the entire English football… a Goan family from St Mathias, Divar Islands, a die-hard Leicester City fans --too joined the party in England. Marius Fernandes (popularly known in Goa as Festikar) and his family have been supporters of Leicester City since 1976. To keep the Leicester tradition running in the family, Marius ensured to register his son Ashley Fernandes as a member of the club just 70 minutes following his birth, thus making him the youngest member ever.  click here

By Kimberly Colaco. … For another bride from Loutolim, the spike in cases came as shocker, she had planned her wedding in May, but has decided to cancel all the bookings and have it at home. "I have a big place and the backyard is also very huge, so instead of risking many people who want to attend the wedding we decided to have it at home. We have asked only our families to attend which are around 20 people in total." She adds, “The food will be made simple - Pulao, one meat dish, one chicken and salad and a vegetable dish. Japanese-born Martinho Hara (c1568-1629 was an accomplished Latin public speaker … He studied with the Jesuits who had founded colleges across Asia and Latin America… Hara delivered his Latin oration in 1588 in the chapel of St Paul’s College in Goa … the 17th-century Portuguese missionary Miguel de Almeida clothed classical references in eloquent Konkani in his ornate sermons to celebrate saints’ days… Of course, Almeida had to adjust their names to fit the needs of Konkani grammar and explain who they were … So, next time you think of the Renaissance and its influence, by all means think of Florence, Milan and Rome.
