Death: Rosarinho Desouza, London, ex Nairobi & Goa

10 Jan. 2022: London. ROSARINHO MANUEL BASILIO DESOUZA, ex Nairobi.& Goa Born 14.06.1959. Son of the late Joao Menino Desouza and late Maria Magdalena Desouza. Son-in-law of the late Felix Fernandes and late Aurita Fernandes. Beloved husband of Maria Eugenia Desouza (Gemma), father of Chantalle and Charlton Desouza. Brother of Francis Desouza and uncle to Charlene and Ethan Desouza (London). Brother-in-law of Silvia Fernandes (London), Doris Rebello, Olav Fernandes ((Abu Dhabi) , Euclid Fernandes, Sushila Dias & Late Sanjay Fernandes (Goa). Died peacefully on 10th January 2022 in hospital after a brief illness and surrounded by his beloved ones. The funeral date will be announced later. Indian Bishop Is Acquitted on Charges of Raping a Nun

14 Jun: New York Times. A Catholic bishop who was accused of repeatedly raping a nun in southern India over a two-year period was acquitted on Friday, bringing an end for now to what appeared to be the country’s first case of its kind. The bishop, Franco Mulakkal, who had been on trial since 2020, had consistently said he was innocent. “Praise the Lord,” he said after the verdict. The judge said prosecutors had failed to prove their case. Investigating officers in Kerala said the ruling would be appealed to a higher court. The case, believed to be the first in India in which a bishop was charged with raping a nun, highlighted deep divisions within the Catholic Church in the country… 466 words…  click here

When Portuguese Soldiers Surrounded the Grave of ‘The Greatest of all Goans’

A pioneer of the anti-colonial struggle against the Portuguese in Goa, Luis de Menezes Braganza sacrificed his great wealth for the cause… many consider him as Goa’s fiercest proponent of independence from the Portuguese. He was born on 15 January 1878 in Chandor … He was one of the few among Goa’s elites who resented colonial rule and wanted to bring drastic changes to conservative Goan Catholic and Hindu society… Barely 22, Luis got together with Goan writer Professor Messias Gomes to establish Goa’s first Portuguese language daily called O Heraldo in 1900 … Following his death, the colonial administration stationed Portuguese troops around his grave to prevent any attempt by the Goans to pay their final respects and stir up nationalistic protests… 1405 words  click here

Sardinha: Bullfights do not amount to animal cruelty

13 Jan: Times of India: Pitching for lifting the ban on dhirios (bullfights), South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha argued that the animal sport didn’t amount to cruelty towards animals. He said…”If humans can fight, why can’t animals be made to fight to establish the champions among them? If dhirio is cruelty towards animals, then ban ploughing of fields by oxen too. A new disaster has come to Goa: tourists began to cut their feet on the beaches

14 Jan: Tourprom (Russia). Along with the return of vacationers to the beaches of Goa, a new disaster came: tourists began to cut their feet on the beaches. The reason is a huge amount of rubbish, according to Indian media. The incredible amount of glass and plastic bottles, bags and other debris left over from drunken New Year's parties not only deprives the resort's beaches of the latest aesthetics - it becomes seriously dangerous. “Palolem leads the way with a 3103% increase in glass waste. In Calangute, the garbage has increased by 559%, "- such a monstrous estimate was presented by researchers from the University of Goa. They surveyed eight beaches in total.
