Canada: Jordan de Souza: ‘Music is the passion of the family’

7 Aug: Navhind Times. By Luis Dias. The BBC Proms concert actually featured a Goan-origin Canadian conductor: Jordan de Souza, making his Proms debut! He conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra in a challenging programme … I’ve been following de Souza’s career with interest for some years. It started off for the obvious reason that he was Goan-origin … His family was once based in Dubai, emigrating eventually to Canada where Jordan was born. He is the seventh of eight siblings (seven boys and a girl), and all eight played music growing up. His mother is a pianist, and was his first teacher. Piano and pipe organ are his primary instruments… While still a teenager, de Souza was named conductor of one of Canada’s best church choirs, the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul in Montreal in 2008…  click here

Ramona Leitao: Toronto: New farmers market features Black and Indigenous vendors

6 Aug: The Globe and Mail. By Ramona Leitao. A first of its kind in Toronto, this has a vibrant atmosphere of cuisine, music and fresh produce … Camille Mayers, a queer, Black chef based in Toronto, has launched Deeply Rooted Farmers’ Market, the first market of its kind in Toronto to feature exclusively Black and Indigenous vendors, which officially launched on May 8… It’s a combination of savoury, spicy and sweet food, like fried chicken waffles from Mx. Mayers themself, jerk pork sandwiches by chef Marty Alexander, peach samosas by Niagara Samosas and classic injera with misir wat, a spicy lentil dish, by Bethlehem Mitiku. Ethiopian-styled coffee, homemade lemonade iced tea and fruit smoothies are also available to drink…The farmers market runs every Sunday until Sept. 25 at Dieppe Park in East York.  click here

Patriotism for dummies

7 Aug: Herald. By Vivek Menezes. Bringing the flag home collectively as a nation in the 75th year of Independence becomes symbolic of not only an act of personal connection to the Tiranga but also an embodiment of our commitment to nation-building… The Tiranga in 1955 photo also includes Will Xavier Mascarenhas of Porvorim… Mascarenhas was my maternal grandfather … I’m intimately aware how he – and indeed the entire generation of nation-builders to which he belonged never believed in public chest-thumping about their patriotic sentiments… Let’s wait until after August 15 to breathe easy – but its already quite breath-taking to watch every villainous rogue in public office (not to mention all other fields) race to flaunt the sacred tricolour on social media, as though its going to absolve them from their crimes… For a nation where above 60% of the population lives on less than Rs 200 a day, this seems like so much of a diversion from the real task of building an equitable nation…  click here

From The Portuguese Press

7 Aug: Diario de Noticias (Portugal). Goa: Bicholim of my time. By Ivo da Rocha. Little has been said about Bicholim, Goa. It is part of the so-called New Conquests, North and East of Goa. These parts were tough for the Portuguese settlers to crack. Shivaji, Bhonsle, Ranés and others gave no rest with their incursions… Despite having travelled through several parts of the globe, Bicholim is close to my heart. And, despite being based in Portugal for more than 65 years (I came to the University of Coimbra in 1956), I bring back the memories of Bicholim, which I come here to share and remember how happy those times were, of healthy peace and coexistence between the three communities of Hindus, Christians and Mohammedans, harmoniously intertwined… Bicholim was the strategic point of northern Goa and the lung of its thriving industry, commerce, agriculture and forestry… 2667 words  click here
6 Aug: Diario de Noticias (Portugal). The appealing voices of childhood. By Valentino Viegas. There's no turning back, because every now and then it happens to me. Unintentionally, when I least expect it, I hear the appealing voices of childhood… At the beginning of the steep ascent, as I progressed, not always with my feet correctly planted, I remembered the words of the three neighbours, much older, inhabitants of the Poço do Padeiro neighbourhood, in Panjim, Goa… When we were young and went up to the lighthouse, we avoided looking down and looked for a fixed place where we could hold on firmly and confidently… I at least have the consolation of being able to remember the beautiful childhood years lived in the land where I was born, my dear and missed Goa… 931 words.  click here
5 Aug: SAPO Lifestyle (Portugal). There are gastronomic novelties to enjoy in Lisbon… It is in the vicinity of Casa de Goa, on Calçada do Livramento, that you will find this space that is a little bit of everything: terrace, viewpoint or a modern rooftop. Go a Lisboa opened on the 8th of July… 1156 words click here.
