*670 words. In a circular issued on 12 Aug. Archbishop Raul Gonsalves stated that Goa’s infrastructure appears to be collapsing, the roads are filled with noxious fumes due to petrol adulteration, communication lines are invariably dead, power cuts are literally cutting the people and Goa is now one of the most expensive regions in the country.

*480 words. Consua Parish Priest, Fr Anthony Miranda and some others have had a police complaint filed against them when a group of 150, including 50 women, agitated against the proposal to have a polluting factory, Meta Strips, based at Sancoale.

The Pope is to visit India November 5 to 8. The itinerary is being worked out.

Goa's Public Service Chairman Arvind Bhatikar has resigned, apparently owing to interference by CM Faleiro. Chief Secretary Sharma remains in post.

The India National election takes place in Goa on Sep. 5th. The main candidates are - Congress: Ramakant Khalap (N), Joaquim Alemao (S). BJP: Shripad Naik (N), Ramakant Angle (S). RCP: Sadanand Naik (N), Dr Wilfred De Souza (S). MGP: Kashinath Zalmi (N), Rohidas Naik (S). The results will be announced on 10 Oct.

Madame Rosa Distillery of Saligao has dispatched a strong letter to Prince Philip, along with a bottle of Europa 2000 Almond liqueur to show what Indians are capable of.

Clearance has been given for the construction of Asia's largest naval base in Karwar. 7-9 yrs completion.
