COMMUNITY NEWS

Surgeon returns. Alban Barros D'Sa, who was suspended from his job as a general surgeon at Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry two years ago after he "blew the whistle" on a colleague, was reinstated yesterday. He had raised concerns about a fellow surgeon's high mortality rate. From The Times, July 7.

THE NEWSLETTER DONATIONS APPEAL. I am afraid that I am not in a position yet to close the appeal and announce the Plan of action because:

  1. Pledges are still coming in - £ 620 so far.
  2. A number of you have suggested that the Goan Association should sponsor the newsletter. This may be feasible but there are problems of accepting sponsorship: How is the independence of the newsletter safeguarded? My preference is to keep the newsletter independent and a Community resource.
  3. Others have suggested charging for announcing Community events. What would happen regarding those who do not pay? If those functions are not mentioned, it would devalue the newsletter. The additional work involved is more than I can handle. However if there is a Publisher, Accountant and Advertising Manager prepared to help, I just might change my mind! Remember, the newsletter will continue to be FREE. Donations (UKP 10 suggested) are solicited from UK residents but there is no compulsion.

So thank you to those who have made the Pledge and comments welcome from those who have not. If you prefer, you can call me on 020-8883 4786 (evenings & weekends).
