SURVEY RESULTS

When asked about the level of UK Goan Community news required, the result was: More: 43 Less: 6 Same: 46. I would like to increase the level of Community News provided since this is the main purpose of the newsletter. But HOW? COMMUNITY NEWS

Mr Justin Pereira reminded me of the Merton Goan Senior Citizens Association. There are some successful Goan organisations that never get any publicity in this newsletter because they are unable to expand operations. The Merton Goan Senior Citizens Association is one of them. It was founded in 1994 and currently has 300 members, mainly resident in Merton. Members meet every Wednesday at John Innes Youth Centre, South Wimbledon for a range of leisure activities and for a monthly curry lunch (which I was privileged to be invited to some years ago). They have a waiting list for membership. Mr Cajie Simoes is the Committee Chairman.

Congratulations to Aires Rodrigues for having passed his Law finals. He returned to Goa with his family last year after having spent many years in Canada and London. He has now started his own practice, advising expatriate Goans. airesrod@goatelecom.com

Goan Welfare Society, Nairobi. New Committee. Chairman Jack De Souza; V- Chairman Stan Franco; Secretary Joyce D'Souza-Shamshudin; Treasurer Piety Goes; Members Bernadette Quadros, Ian Fernandes Que Lopez and Jonathan Pereira.

Whistle blower Professor Alban Barros D'Sa (ex-Nairobi), obtained a reversal of a suspension order of nearly two years after he raised concerns about the record of a surgeon whose mortality rates were up to four times higher than national targets.

His two brothers, Leo (Lawyer) and Aires (also a Surgeon), are both high achievers. Aires, Professor at the University of Belfast, was awarded the OBE in June 2000.

Last year, in another landmark judgement, whistle blower Antonio (Toni) Fernandes of Reading, was awarded over £280,000 damages after being dismissed from his £70,000-a-year job for blowing the whistle on his managing director's expense claims.
