Jo-Ann D'Costa gave a captivating performance last Saturday in the finals of Soapstars, (ITV). The programme showed her at home with boyfriend Wayne and parents Tony & Sally. Her sister, Wendy, missed the live action as she works for Continental Airlines and was in New York. Shame Jo-Ann was not selected, though she is appearing on C4 Big Breakfast all this week. If you thought Tony & Sally looked familiar, yes, they are regulars at the Goan events. Tony is the son of late Joe and Bertha D'Costa (East African Airways, Nairobi). Sally is the daughter of Reggie and Latina Coelho also of Nairobi.

One consequence of the Anti-Muslim sentiment in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in the US is that the Catholic Goans in the West have taken to wearing the crucifix rather prominently!

Eating Out - How restaurateurs are responding to the events of September 11…When dinner reservations sank to three one evening at Cucina, in north London [Hampstead], proprietor Vernon Mascarenhas [ex Mombasa] decided to act. "I made my a`la carte dinner menu Pounds 15 for three courses, regardless of what anyone chooses," he explained, a saving of 30-50 per cent, until the end of September. "We have been serving 70 to 80 customers ever since." …

24 Sept. The Evening Post. New Zealand. Albert Fernandes is seeking $9000 compensation from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority after his original university qualification papers went missing for seven months because they were sent to Saudi Arabia instead of India. He could not register as a lawyer without his original certificates.

28 Sep. Business Times (Malaysia). Tony Fernandes, [ex UK], the new CEO of Tune Air, Malaysia, is to offer cheap no-frill domestic air travel for Malaysians by January. He has invited former Ryanair's director of operations Conor McCarthy to come on-board as consultant and investor. He is modelling his airline after the British value and lifestyle oriented Virgin Atlantic, on which he has insider knowledge thanks to his stint as an accountant in the Virgin Group in the 1980s. He would not disclose his backers, but did not downplay speculation that Tune Air may have a tie-up with Virgin Atlantic and its flamboyant boss Richard Branson.

Henry Assumption and his son-in-law, Valentine D'Souza, use family recipes tempered to our mild palates to make a range of 15 curry pastes, chutneys, sambals and achars.
