From Flavio Gracias: The Goan Association UK - Senior Citizens Lunch on Sunday 7th October 2001 saw over 100 of our Senior Citizens enjoy an appetising aperitif of "caju feni" punch, followed by a delicious 3 course meal and a warm cup of tea. Music was provided by Canute Aguiar and the Goan Cultural Society, managed by Gregg Carvalho, gave a special "free" performance of Konkanim songs. Our thanks to Concy Fernandes and her family, who catered for the occasion.

5 Oct. The Australian. Goa, with its internationally renowned beaches and centuries of Portuguese flavour, has begun to attract people from Australia and packages are being tailored to meet the needs of this market. Allan Fernandes, a marketing services consultant in Sydney, said, "the Indian Tourist Office worked very hard at changing people's impressions of India. It had a terrible image and we wanted to create the image that India is a big country with a lot of choices. There is a little something for everyone."

5 Oct. Financial Express. "Our company has recently exported more than thousand cases of feni to Dubai and London and supplies it to most of the popular restaurants worldwide where Goan food is available," says Mr Cedric Vaz, director, Madame Rosa Distillery

  1. Alan Bridges : We stayed at a small place called C'Roque, which is about 10 minutes up the beach from Colva …the owners were very friendly and helpful, and the food in their restaurant was great.
  2. Lorette White: We contacted a guy called Noel Clinton at a company called Daytrippers in Calangute home tel: 27635, mobile: 281191, email: noelclinton@usa.net. He showed us round some family-run places - we chose Paddy's Place, and we paid £2.50pp per night for the Xmas and New Year period.
  3. Fiona Oakes: The Roseland Hotel next to the main Catholic Church in Calangute or the Don Jaou Hotel in Anjuna, run by Mr Gomes…Ask around, the people are friendly and helpful.

9 Oct. Herald. Jambo, Jambo, Karibu! Marc de Souza on his Kenya holiday. Quote: …Goans in Kenya are held in high esteem by the locals. They've carved their names for posterity in all fields. I made it a point to visit the Goan Institutes both in Nairobi and Mombasa. They are huge, having playgrounds and all modern facilities. The names have been changed to Nairobi Institute and Mombasa Institute. Both are still monopolised by Goans. Goans who have taken Kenyan citizenship, appear to be quite content. Why not? 10 Oct. Time Out. Page 48. Bernie Menezes reviewing Bombay Spice restaurant, 396 Green Lanes, N13 writes: 'Goan' prawn masala (£11.50) was cooked in a hot and spicy tomato and onion sauce with a generous amount of large king prawns. [On the next page is an ad for Patak's Goan Kasoori.]

10 Oct. New York Times. Celina D'Costa, a gentle woman in a traditional sari, is vice president of an organization for Indians infected with H.I.V. She is currently in Australia at the International Congress on Aids. Celina D'Costa was apparently infected by her husband in 1994. She quit her clerical job and devotedly nursed him until his death two years later, - only to be rejected by his family, with whom they had been living. They called her names and refused to let her use the toilet. They said the presence of someone with the virus in the house would harm their other son's marriage prospects. She found a room in a hostel, but was forced to leave there too when no one would share a room with her. She then moved from Goa to Kochi. Full text at:

10 Oct. BBC. The Coroner at the Bournemouth inquest of Joleen Sketchley recorded a verdict that she died as a result of a dependency on heroin. In January last year Ms Sketchley was gang-raped while holidaying in Goa. Her father Brian Sketchley, 54, from Rainham, Kent, said his focus now was on getting justice for his daughter. Mr Sketchley said a trial in Goa of a group of men for rape and aiding and abetting rape had been postponed but that he was keeping in contact with the Foreign Office. He said: "I just want to get justice for Joleen in Goa."
