The Membership appeal in the last issue was phenomenal. The winner of the prize for the 1000th subscriber is Maureen D'Souza from Mombasa who sent in 17 names. A copy of the International Goan Directory is on its way to her, courtesy of an attendee to the Mombasa Institute Centenary celebrations and arranged by Tony Luis who is not able to go himself.

*Hockey - Surrey Men's Div One: Croydon MO beat the Goans 4-1. Croydon MO men maintained their unbeaten start to the season against a talented Goan team who had put eight goals past Sanderstead the previous week. This is Local London, Croydon, Oct. 23.

*Tara Mascarenhas from Walworth, South London and with origins in Mangalore was featured in the Independent 21 Oct in the Body Issue. She spoke of the appeal of Yoga.

*The Noon Book Of Authentic Indian Cookery was launched at the Bombay Brasserie in Kensington. Hickey in The Express 11 Oct. 2001 comments: … Meanwhile, Leicester MP Keith Vaz, also present at the launch, seems to have recovered from the mystery illness which had him laid up earlier this year. "I've been learning to cook saffron rice to aid my recovery, " he tells Hickey.

LOOKING FOR

Joel D'Souza has indicated what he would like with the money you donated: a CD writer, Hard disk and a Digital camcorder. He already has the PC upgrades. The camcorder would enable him to send us video clips of events in Goa. He would like a Sony DCR-PC110 and some accessories. The DCR-PC110 has just been replaced by the DCR-PC120. FLIGHT CORNER

The Finnish national airline Finnair is to launch its winter schedule and holiday flights to Goa at the beginning of November. Flights will operate via Dubai. Kauppalehti (Finland) 23 Oct.

The Tourism Department has decided not to permit shack operators to put up deck beds, chairs or umbrellas, either in front or at the sides of the shacks.

*Reeling under the impact of cancellation of charter flights due to terrorist attacks in the US, the hoteliers in the coastal belt of South Goa have decided to travel to the UK to convince the tourists to come to Goa, specially to the south. (Gomantak Times) 22 Oct.

*A book titled "100 Years of Konkani Tiatro", written by Wilson Mazarello (Wilmix), in English will be released, under the 'Promotion of Literature Scheme' of the Department of Art and Culture, at the Ravindra Bhavan, Curchorem on October 23, at 4.00 pm. (The Navhind Times)

Two IT kiosks-one each in Panjim and Margao have started functioning this week. Initially, only the land records will be made available through the kiosks. On the anvil through the kiosks are facilities such video conferencing, telemedicine and various forms routinely used in the Collectorate offices.

An estimated one-fifth of the currency notes of Rs.500 and Rs.1,000 denomination in circulation is counterfeit.. The Finance Ministry has also pointed out that Pakistan is pumping these notes into India

21 Oct. The Irish Independent. Pennies from Heaven is a major charity effort in Ireland. People are asked to contribute loose change and old foreign currency from long-ago holidays lying around. It was on holiday that Mags McLoughlin, director of the promotion wing of Irish International, was first inspired with the idea to put this money to a good cause. "I was lying on a beach in Goa when the idea hit me two years ago…" she said.
