COMMUNITY NEWS

The Annual General Meeting of the Goan Association (UK) was held on Sat.14th Dec. 2002. All the business on the Agenda was completed on the day. Some of the highlights: 1. The annual accounts were presented and noted. 2. The annual statutory report from the Board and reporting Accountant were presented and noted. 3. The new Board comprises:- Flavio Gracias President Diego Pinto Vice President Richard Fernandes Finance Director Cornelius Monteiro Property Director Mafalda deSa Public Relations Director Bosco Saldanha Planning Director Glyn Albuquerque Sports Director In addition:- Louisa Rodrigues Company Secretary Bernie Gracias General Secretary The position of Social & Cultural Director was split, and vacancies exist for a Social Director and a Cultural Director. Additionally the position of Clubhouse Director has been changed to Property Director and the position of Assistant Clubhouse Director has been abolished.

Hillingdon Times. 16 Dec. Gaynor Pereira, lost her daughter, Kizzie, to pneumonia when she was just under 18 months old in 1984. But now the heartache has returned for Mrs Pereira and her husband Alf after learning that St Mary's Church, where their daughter is buried, could be torn down under plans to expand nearby Heathrow. Mrs Pereira told the Times this week: "What is this suggestion that you can desecrate graves? It's unthinkable." For full text, click here...

The Stage 12 Dec. Salman Rushdie's novel Midnight's Children has been adapted by the Royal Shakespeare Company and runs at the Barbican Theatre from Jan. 18-Feb. 23. After that, the production tours to Aberdeen, Nottingham, Birmingham, Bath, Leeds, Milton Keynes, Norwich and Salford. The cast includes Tania Rodrigues and Neil D'Souza.

GOA NEWS HEADLINES

The Goa Additional Sessions Court acquitted five accused of being involved in the rape of Joleen Sketchley at Calangute, on the grounds that there was absolutely no evidence against them. In addition, the victim is no longer alive, and so cannot testify against them.

The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge presented a concert directed by Dr Richard Marlow at the Church of Assisi at Old Goa. Among the several compositions they presented, the hymn in Konkani which received huge applause from the audience. Times of India 17 Dec.

India plans to issue identity cards to people living in sensitive areas in 13 states including Goa. Agence France-Presse. 16 Dec.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar released a book "Goa: Four decades of Freedom. Redefining Horizons", published by the Department of Information and Publicity, at a function on Dec. 18. The book has contributions from 19 subject-specialists, who cover a comprehensive range of topics on Goa.

15 Dec. Sunday Mirror. Football. Jonathan Pearce recalls Bobby Moore death of cancer in 1993. Pearce was in Goa when the hotel got a message to him to contact London urgently, but they had no outgoing telephone lines. A taxi driver took him to a telephone shack in the middle of the jungle and “I told him I feared a friend of mine, Bobby Moore, had died. I made the call, broke down in tears, and then turned around to face the street in this tiny village on the other side of the world. The street was filled with people and the news had spread. Bobby Moore was a hero everywhere.”

16 Dec. Maclean’s (Canada). Immigrants how many is too many? Extract: A week after he arrived in Halifax by himself with a single suitcase and $ 50, Jerry Braganza had a job with a local travel agency. Nearly 30 years later, he owns his own agency, employs five people and generates $ 3 million in annual sales. He was a Ugandan refugee of Indian descent in a British camp when Canadian officials interviewed him. And although Braganza was lonely at first, he and his wife Rita now have a lively circle of friends. "It was difficult but I had to get used to it," he says. "I had no other place to go." 18 Dec. Catholic News Service (Washington DC). Christians in the Indian state of Goa no longer use real "Christmas trees" due to a crackdown by the government's forestry service.
