RECENT ITEMS OF PARTICULAR INTEREST ON GOANET. BY CORNEL DACOSTA

B.K.Verghese has provided an interesting and informative article titled: From Palm Leaves to the Printed World. It is about the history of the printing press in India--as the history of the re-awakening of a nation. While this theme was featured in the Goan Voice (UK) a while ago, there is much new material in the current article. The Christian missionaries who were keen to produce the Bible in several Indian languages introduced printing in India as early as 1556. From this early start, there are now 16,000 publishers producing 70,000 titles every year and of which 40% are in English. India is thus the largest producer of books in English after the UK and the USA and for this reason was accorded the status of "Guest of Honour" in Oct 2006 at the Frankfurt World Book Fair.

Perhaps courses at very reasonable cost, in conversational Konkani, are timely for many Goan diasporans visiting Goa. These 5 day courses are available at St Xavier's College, Mapusa. (Tel: 2262356)

Did we know that the ink in ball point pens, and the content of glycerine were discoveries by a Goan in the 1850s? Apparently these were produced by the eminent Goan scientist---Dr. Agostinho Vincent Lourenco. Read more about this and about Children's books of History on Goanet in a brief article by Augusto Pinto.

"Metahistory: History questioning History is the name of a festchrift presented in honour of prominent Indo-Portuguese historian Prof Teotonio R de Souza on the occasion of his 60th birthday." It was edited by Charles J Borges and Michael N Pearson and published by Nova Vega in Lisbon in 2007. The work represents trends and analyses in current research in the fields of Goan, Indo-Portuguese and Asian Studies. Goanet provides an excellent and detailed account of the essays within this volume.

Finally, do read a penetrating and intellectually laden short piece by Selma Carvalho titled: The Moral Zeitgeist of Goa. It is basically about the values that are important to us [Goans] and the values we will shape in generations to come. There is also a seeming rhetorical issue raised in the question---"Is the moral Zeitgeist in Goa stunted?"
