WHO THE BLEEP CARES?
Weekly column by Selma Carvalho.

Who the bleep cares about the young?

Five years ago I was in Goa attending a family wedding whilst the campaigning for India Election 2004 was in full swing. The country had seen some economic advances and riding on the crest of their India Shinning campaign, the BJP was in a buoyant bordering on belligerent mood. They were sure to win. They were wrong for the Congress swept to power putting paid to the notion that any party in India could chose to ignore its 600 million strong majority who lives below the poverty line and depend on a middle-class vote bank, as the BJP had done.

Cut to 2009 and co-incidentally I again happened to be in Goa, attending a family wedding whilst the campaigning for India election 2009 was in full momentum. This time the BJP were not so zealous but the left front with a certain amount of misplaced bravado was confident of forming the government. The election results have devastated both the BJP and the left front. The Congress has resurged triumphant in its best ever performance since 1991.

A lot of the credit for a Congress renewal has been placed squarely on the young shoulders of Rahul Gandhi, who is said to have re-energised the Congress party, infused it with hope and brought in young voters to the ballot-box. All this is eerily familiar to the Obama story. It is the young of America who first embraced Obama. In a country where the politics of race is still very much a pertinent issue, it is the college-going youth who in part made the Martin Luther-King dream of a country, where a man is judged not by the colour of his skin but by the content of his character, possible.

Throughout history we have been saved by our youth. Just as the ugly, slummy tide of conservative, grey men threatens to take over the world and let it drown under its debris of communalism, racism, irreverent capitalism and unwarranted aggression, it is the youth that herald in change. In the 1960s, the much maligned hippy Woodstock revolution of sexual and drug excesses nonetheless opened the dialogue for civil liberties, racial equality and ultimately put an end to the Vietnam War.

Much as we may deride our youth for being irresponsible, self-involved and engaged with the superficial, it is indeed our youth that bring about changes in our thinking, that challenge the status quo and force humanity’s hand in making the kind of changes which take us forward. It is inevitably our youth who are our beacon of hope, for in the immortal words of Khalil Gibran, our sons and daughters are “life’s longing for itself” and thankfully “life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.”
