4 Feb. This is Blackburn. Retired Blackburn GP Dr Alan Rebello and his wife Maisie celebrated their golden wedding with a mass at Sacred Heart church followed by a meal for family and close friends. The couple married in Bombay in 1953 and moved to the UK in 1954. They have four sons, Louis, Andre, Tony and Alfred and three grandchildren. When the non-resident Goan or for that matter a resident Indian comes to Goa with the desire to start a venture in Goa everyone in the political establishment and the bureaucracy does everything possible to discourage if not disgust him or her… The experience of those who have taken the Chief Minister at his word and have dropped in to see him has been horrendous… Goans are fatalistically resigned to the fact that it will take days if not months to get anything done in Goa. From Fred Noronha's posting on GoaNet: Tests conducted by the Pollution Monitoring Laboratory (PML) reveal disturbing of pollutants in bottled drinking water. 20 samples available in Delhi and Mumbai were analysed. Top seller Bisleri was third from the bottom, with pesticide concentration levels 79 times higher than the stipulated limits. 26 Jan. Calgary Herald. A poem published in a recent edition of Calgary's Good Morning News perpetuates negative stereotypes of immigrants in Canada, say some members of the city's ethnic community. Written as a satirical first-person account by an immigrant, the poem describes the ease of an immigrant's life living off welfare, having bills paid for him, and bringing 14 families to Canada, all in broken English. However, Suneel D'Souza said the poem was intended to be light-hearted, and not meant to offend anyone. "My parents came here from India with very little and I'd like to consider that they've made it," he said.

The fab Pyrmont eatery Kokum - Taste of Goa has been good enough in its short life to make The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide. Alas, it has fallen victim to a partnership dispute. Co-owner Anil Ashokan says he doesn't know when it will re-open. "If I'm not able to do it in the same venue, I'd like to do it elsewhere," he says. His partner, chef Walter Fernandes, says he plans on doing the same.
