WHO THE BLEEP CARES?
Weekly column by Selma Carvalho.

Who the bleep cares about childhood?

From the window in my bedroom, overlooking my mother's garden sparsely dotted with the last surviving bougainvillea of May, I see my daughter sauntering up the paved path, barefoot and chasing butterflies. Is there anything more wonderful than a childhood in Goa?

The month of May scorches the earth with its humidity but it seduces the trees with the succulence of mango, guava, papaya, banana and jackfruit. As children, my brother and I would find ourselves stealing into our grandmother's larder, stocked as it was with jackfruit and mango, delicately placed on straw to ripen to perfection. Another fruit that grows in abundance during this time is the deep purple zamdam, which has a distinct taste and of which some Goan housewives are known to make a zesty wine. The mangoes are made into a mangada, a sticky, sweet jam, while the kernel of the jackfruit is diced and deep fried..

I see my daughter clad in a cotton polka-dot dress run up to her grandmother who is trying to coax her to pluck the last remaining papayas from the lush bounty of a short, reedy papaya tree. She is beyond joy as her tiny fingers stretch out to grasp the bright green fruit, yellowing on its side. The dog is barking up a minor hysterical storm at her fumbling attempts. She falls laughing into my mother's arms.

May was also the month, my grandmother pickled fish and pork into a parra; the thick acidic smell of the palm vinegar and red hot chillies would hover about the house tickling our nostrils. The last batch of sausages would be dried and hung above the open-fire to be cured. The onions would be strung up, the velvety binda sol dried, the rice still in its brown husk boiled and stored in vats, later to be taken to the mill and de-husked. These preserves were important to get through the lean monsoon months.

My daughter is looking intently at a dragonfly flitting from flower to flower. As kids my brother and I would spend hours chasing these gossamer-winged insects. Bright-red ladybirds would suddenly find themselves entrapped on paper, set about by my brother as a clever device to ensnare them. Tiny, bulbous, croaking frogs were an endless source of entertainment even if we were a little fearful of their slimy brown skin and ugly protruding eyes.

Just as we thought the sun-coloured days of summer would never come to an end, the monsoonal rains would arrive; the brazenly fertile earth lustily opening up to consume the torrents, reclining afterwards in quietude, a languid silence waiting to be broken by the next thunder storm. There is nothing quite like the pungent, fecund smell of the earth after the first showers.

My father has just arrived at the garden-gate, returning from the market on his scooter. My daughter runs up to him to enquire what he has in his bags, her eyes lit-up with all the innocence and curiosity that resides in the hearts of the very young, hoping to find a few sweeties in those plastic bags. Soon it will be time to depart for my daughter to depart from her grandparents’ house and return home.

Soon it will be time for me to leave my childhood behind.
