GOANET HIGHLIGHTS by CORNEL DACOSTA

Do read an unusual account titled 'Kids Juggle, Trapeze to Inspire Smiles.' This is about kids who "walk on stilts, juggle and do acrobatics for a theatrical street performance, an attempt to to bring a little fantasy to life to inspire all to smile." They are part of of a 'Laboratory of Smiles' a group of 25 underprivileged children trained by an Italian theatre group, Teatro Per Caso, and touring Mumbai, Pune and Panjim this month.

A major publication from the International Centre, Goa is now available titled Towards Freedom in South Asia: Democratization, Peace and Regional Co-operation by Panandiker and Tripathi and published by Konark Publishers.

In a short article by Selma Carvalho, we learn about Delhi, the capital of India that is also the rape capital of India in which no woman will venture out after 7 p.m. Indeed, a substantial number of the rapes are those against minors. The attitude of the North Indian male towards women in general is highlighted and there is much detail about child rape.

The 30th International Film Festival, India, is almost upon us in Goa and details about the films to be seen as well as the literary competitions for local talent are provided by Ethel Da Costa. Additionally, there is a substantial article on the IFFI by Godfrey Gonsalves.

For an excellent account of current Konkani periodicals published in Devanagari, Roman Kannada, and Perso-Arabic scripts, please see material provided by Pratap Naik. I for one was truly staggered by the sheer numbers and varieties of the periodicals listed.

A persuasive article by Anil Desai tells us why Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in Goa should be banned. The main reason provided is that the plans are not well thought out and deemed to be a boon to those who want to exploit Goa rather than enhance it economically.
