28 May: National Post (Canada) A lack of homegrown funding is driving Canadian tech startups to seek out foreign equity investment, according to a new study … “If you want to build a world-class company, you can’t build it completely insulated within Canada,” said Andrew D’Souza, chief operating officer at Toronto-based education startup Top Hat … His company received $8-million in from California-based Emergence Capital Partners and Montreal’s iNovia Capital last July and an additional $1.1-million from Calif.-based Felicis Ventures in January… 848 words.  click here

Andrew D'Souza was born in Mumbai in 1985, the son of Yvette and Dinesh D’Souza of (with Saligao roots). The family emigrated to US in 1988 and to Canada in 1991. They live in Mississauga. After graduating from University of Waterloo in 2008 Andrew worked in various companies like McKinsey & Company, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Xerox.

Bombay: Lawrence D’Souza’s detention in 1955
27 May: Pakistan Law Reporter. Citation of the case: Lawrence Joachim Joseph D’Souza VS. The State of Bombay… Lawrence was a Bombay lawyer and had been a Commissioned Officer in the Indian Air Force … he was also interested in journalism and was concerned over the political future of Goa … Police raided his house in Aug. 1954 for alleged possession of illicit liquor which, in fact, was not found. But under that guise police seized a mass of documents … he was taken into illegal police custody and interrogated, and physically assaulted and threatened. After he appealed to the High Court, the papers were returned to him… Between April and June, 1955 there occurred certain incidents by the members of the Goan Action Committee who were agitating against Portuguese hold over Goa. There was a raid on certain pro-Portuguese presses by some private persons, in the course of which heavy damage was caused. There was also an assault on Lawrence by a gang of persons … Lawrence D'Souza was detained in Bombay in June 1955 in the interest of public order and on the grounds that with the financial help given by the Portuguese authorities he was carrying on espionage on their behalf... He appealed to the High Court and this was rejected in April 1956… 3928 words.  click here

Mombasa: Grace De Souza: Eco-warrior Buried in Befitting Style
