Tour operators worry over delay in visa-on-arrival facility
7 Apr: Times of India. A delay in commissioning of visa-on-arrival (VoA) facility at Dabolim airport is a worrying factor for tour operators as the season comes to a close. The Goa airport was offered VoA facility last year along with four other airports in the country. It was declared that the facility would be made operational once the new terminus was commissioned. Though a new terminus has been opened, it is only for domestic traffic. Tour operators fear that a further delay of two or three months in getting the facility started at Dabolim airport may not yield much benefit for the next season despite of a hassle-free entry into India as bookings for the European market start early…  click here

Elections: The Church is alive to the social situation’

Konkdi, Konklish

6 Apr: Navhind Times. By Sheela Jaywant. A few years ago, rural Goa knew only Konkani. Today in the buses, conductors say “Foodey jaao” or “Aagey voch” in a fast-evolving mongrel language. “Sakal utrro” and “Neechey dev” are other interchangeable part-Hindi part-Konkani commonly used phrases… Bekaar in Hindi may mean without occupation, but in Konkdi it may be misconstrued as one without a car … Konklish finds its way around: “I’m going faatee” might sound like someone is about to pass wind, but means s/he is going to the back (of the bus in a context)… Sheela Jaywant believes the world is fun(ny); she has been writing about that fun(niness) since 1983... and before she came to settle in the land of her ancestors, in previous avatars, she worked as a hospital administrator, in a hotel, as a teacher and librarian…  click here

A Window to Goan History
6 Apr: Sunday Standard. If we saw the launch of an exhibition celebrating modern and contemporary art of India on one hand, we also saw art celebrating Goan heritage on the other. Renowned artist Subodh Kerkar curated the ‘Balcao-an exhibition on Goan history’ at Dhoomimal gallery in Delhi. The exhibition represents Portuguese influence on Goan culture. The exhibition gives Delhiites a window to feel Goan culture through the works by Goan artists and selective works by F N Souza. The balcao (balcony) being an essential feature of Goan homes, the artists have put in all their creativity to make Goan history alive in Delhi through their paintings and sculptures…  click here
