50 Years Ago: Goa Blasts - 2 men from Portugal responsible

22 July 1964. Asian Age. The Goa police investigating the bomb outrages in Goa on June 20 last have gathered enough evidence to the effect that Casimiro Monteiro (photo), the notorious Portuguese police official who was a terror to the nationalists, and Ismail Dias, a Goan settled in Portugal, were the main perpetrators of the crime, it is reliably learnt. It is believed that Monteiro was in Goa for about three weeks prior to the explosions and was masquerading under a false name. While it was not known as to how exactly Monteiro and Dias smuggled themselves into the country and fled after the explosions, it is suspected that they stowed away in a foreign ship from Mormagoa harbour or managed to reach Bombay before escaping from the country.  click here
Monteiro was born in Goa, fought in the Spanish Civil War and later moved to the UK, where he worked for a butcher whose daughter he married. He then returned to Goa working in the Secret Service and was known for brutal torture/ interrogations. In 1965, he assassinated General Humberto Delgado and strangled his secretary in Spain.
