Death: Georgina Martins

23 Aug: Maryland, USA. GEORGINA LAURA MARTINS. Born in Saligoa, Goa, 1922. She was the loving mother of Lourdes (Felix) Fernandes & Flora (Armando) Ribeiro. Cherished grandmother of Conrad (Sheila), Daryl (Onecia) & David Ribeiro and Audrey (Alex) Fernandes. Beloved great-grandmother to Matthew, Ethan, Kelly, Adam, Joseph, Andrew & Sophie. She was one of six siblings, survived by her older brother Lucas (Martha) Fernandes of Margao, Goa. The Funeral will be held at St. Patrick's Church in Rockville, Maryland on August 28th, 2014 at 10:30 AM. Condolences may be sent to  email

Goa Cong Suspends Leader Alexio Sequeira Over 'Anti-Party' Acts

23 Aug: Outlook. Goa Congress today suspended its leader and former Power Minister Aleixo Sequeira (photo) for "anti party" activities, and initiated disciplinary action against him. "Sequeira has been placed under suspension until appropriate disciplinary proceeding initiated against him are completed," state party President John Fernandes said. Goa Congress spokesman Pratima Coutinho, while announcing the action, said Sequeira had been often involved in "anti-party" activities, including a bid to topple the party-led government, which helped BJP leader Manohar Parrikar to form a Government some years ago …  click here

Immigrants are changing the perception of Canadian politeness

But I am afraid that as Canada’s demographics change, such a wonderful stereotype is in danger of becoming extinct in a generation or two. It is not all the fault of new immigrants, many of whom come from countries and backgrounds where such social niceties are part of the culture, but aren’t practiced any more… new immigrants are bewildered when they’ve encountered Canadians using words that weren’t used very often in their home countries like ‘Please’, ‘Thank You’ and ‘I’m Sorry’. Fr. Jose Sequeira: One To One with Keith Vaz

23 Aug: Asian Voice (UK). Fr. Jose Sequeira was born in Vasco-Goa, India. Inspired by the dedicated work of a priest from his parish in Vasco, he joined seminary in class VII (grade 7). Fr Jose was ordained a catholic priest in 1998. As a priest he served in several different positions across India. He was an assistant pastor at Don Bosco Church, Nashik in Maharashtra and subsequently became an administrator of an orphanage in Borivli, Mumbai… He has also been the Director of a Counselling Centre and Assistant Director of Konkan Development Society at Panjim in Goa. For the last four years he has been an Executive Director of Konkan Development Society (KDS)…  click here

Goa tries to protect its famed ‘Sea of Milk’ tourist attraction

24 Aug: Peninsula (Qatar). It almost featured in a James Bond movie. Now, the very existence of Dudhsagar, Goa’s grandest waterfall and a major tourism attraction, is in peril due to a series of dams neighbouring Karnataka plans to construct and Goa is desperate to ensure this doesn’t happen. Literally translating into “Sea of Milk”, Dudhsagar almost featured as a backdrop to an early action sequence in the 23rd Bond film Skyfall, where the British spy, engaged in a fist-fest atop a train compartment, gets accidentally shot and falls into the raging torrent below… the Karnataka government has planned a complex network of dams and diversionary canals over the Mhadei river that feeds the waterfall. Water Resources Minister Dayanand Mandrekar said Goa will oppose this tooth and nail…  click here

‘Broke’ Italian held for break-in, theft
24 Aug: Times of India. Mario Santilli, an Italian national who has been visiting Goa regularly since 1975, has been arrested by Anjuna police for breaking into a house and stealing domestic appliances and jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh. Sources suspect Santilli, in his fifties, is going through a money crunch and stole the items to sell… During investigations police traced Santilli to his rented room and recovered the stolen items…  click here
