Obituary

Death: Joe D'Souza

30 Apr: Toronto. JOSEPH I. D'SOUZA. Ex Nairobi. He is greatly missed by his loving wife Natalina, his children Francis (Laurie), Ansettan (Valtino), Sidney and Alexander, his grandchildren Ian, Victoria, Isabella and Tristan and his siblings Theresa (Walter), Rose (late Dominic), John, Romeo (Connie) and Xavier (Ida) and all his wonderful family. The family will receive friends at the Ogden Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 6, from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. and Thursday, May 7, 2015 from 5 - 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2015 at St. Joseph's Highland Creek Roman Catholic Church (200 Morrish Rd., Scarborough). India wants to change the law that allows Goans have Portuguese nationality

5 May: TSF (Portugal). A proposed amendment to the nationality law in India will prevent Goans registered in Portugal being Indian citizens. Goans, born before December 1961 and registered their children in Portugal after this date will not be considered Portuguese citizens in the light of a new bill under discussion in India… It is now up to the Ministry of Home Affairs of India to accept or not the recommendations proposed by a specialized committee... Tapes expose Rayney marriage crisis

5 May: West Australian. Recordings of the final days of the crumbling marriage of Lloyd and Corryn Rayney were played to a jury yesterday as the prosecution wrapped up its case alleging the former high-profile prosecutor helped illegally tap his wife’s phone calls… As he continued to deny the allegations of phone tapping, Mr Rayney did make a series of formal admissions to the court — including that their marriage had become acrimonious and that he had refused a demand from her that he move out of their home…  click here

Goa facing decline in fish catch

6 May: Navhind Times. Along with high prices there is unappetizing news for the fish lovers in Goa. Fish catch could be in troubled waters in 2015 implying less of it on the table for the people in coming months. This year there is a fear of all-around drop in haulage by fishermen as they have been reporting less catch in all varieties. Moreover, sardines - the only fish previously caught by them in sufficient quantity - have also been less these months…  click here

Calangute, Uccasaim, Varca and Cansaulim vie for a seat in British House of Commons

6 May: Herald. By Alexandre Moniz Barbosa. Five persons of Goan origin will be battling it out on Thursday to enter the British House of Commons. Besides the Vaz siblings – Labour MPs Keith and Valerie – there is young Suella Fernandes who is a Conservative candidate seeking her maiden entry into the British parliament; Rabi Martins a Liberal Democrat candidate in the race from Hemel Hempstead and Wisdom da Costa who is an Independent contesting from Windsor. Of these five, Keith and Valerie Vaz and Suella Fernandes have the best chances of making it to the House of Commons, giving Goa the biggest number of British MPs ever… 677 words.  click here

Cable snapping hits banking, phone services in North Goa
6 May: Herald. Banking services, telephone lines and Internet services in North Goa were severely affected on Tuesday after BSNL lines were cut by another Internet service provider while laying cables… the first priority Wednesday morning would be to restore the banking lines and then the Internet services in Mapusa. The restoration of the rest of the services would be done by Wednesday evening…  click here

In the 1920s, Goan migrants in Bombay were known as the Italians of the East
5 May: Quartz. In the 1920s, a historical sketch of Goan migrants in Bombay boasted that the community was known as the Italians of the East. Because of their training in western music in parochial schools established by the Portuguese who ruled their home territory, many Goans in British India made their living playing Western music in orchestras established by colonial administrators and maharajahs, in marching bands and in ensembles that accompanied silent films, displaying a talent for musicality presumed to exist only in operatic Italy… Like the Goans, the Filipinos took quickly to western music…  click here

Goa showcases coconuts, cashew to draw in domestic tourists
5 May: IANS. Finally, Goa appears to have given its indigenous coconuts and cashew nuts their due. In a bid to attract domestic tourists during offseason, Goa's tourism ministry last week conducted the inaugural edition of the 'Coconut and Cashew Festival', showcasing the two products and simultaneously making a popular statement about just how integral the nuts have been to Goa's socio-cultural and economic history. The festival was organised along with a dash of music, entertainment and other innovative food and drinks inspired by coconuts and cashews…  click here
