By Hartman De Souza … I was 10, in Mombasa, Kenya, when I knew a grown man could cry over his team losing the final of a match… In 1960 when the Indian hockey team went to Rome, they broke journey by ship in Mombasa to play practice games against Kenyan teams. The team’s stay in Mombasa was hosted by the Indian community, so two of the players were given my bedroom… When it came to hockey, in Nairobi this meant the Sikh Union Sports Club, the Goan Institute, and the Sir Ali Bin Salim Sports Club. Konknni cantaram reach German shores
25 Jul: Herald. Enamoured with Konkani cantaram since she first visited Goa, Frankfurt Radio executive Sigrid Pfeffer (photo), has done intensive research on this genre of music. Her compilations have been put together in a CD ‘Konkani-Songs Music from Bombay – made in Bombay’ (2009). Over the years she has shared these songs with various German radio stations and has been instrumental in including Konkani music for the very first time at the Mother India Wassermusik 2015, where Schubert Cotta and his team will be performing on Saturday. Sudhir Kakar, one of India’s best known psychoanalysts and writers, returns to the past again in his latest book about the life and times of a fictional Sanskrit poet in 7th century India … He says, “I have chosen to live in a village in Goa where there are no social distractions and thus I have ample time for writing.” Kakar admits he is hardly a disciplined writer, mostly preferring a walk on the scenic Goan beaches or listening to music or reading rather than engaging in what he calls “the unnatural act of filling a blank piece of paper with words.
