Death and Funeral Notice: Florencio 'Alcantro' Rodrigues

9 Oct. 2015. London. FLORENCIO 'ALCANTRO' RODRIGUES. 1918. Ex Nakuru. Kenya. Beloved husband of the late Rosa, Father of Trina, Effie/Gerry, Francis/Rosy and the late Pauline. Alcantro was a loving father and grandfather, and will be deeply missed by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The Funeral Mass will take place on the Monday 19th October 2015, 10am at St. Augustine's Church, Loudon Avenue, Barkingside, IG6 1AU. Burial thereafter at Forest Park Cemetery and Crematorium, Forest Road, Hainault, IG6 3HP. Condolences to Francisx.rodrigues@yahoo.co.uk


Death: Nicholas (Nicky) D’Souza
10 Oct: Mumbai. NICHOLAS (NICKY) D’SOUZA Aged 58. Former hockey player (Young Sports, Bombay Republicans, Punjab Sports and Western Railway). He is survived by his wife Philomena, daughters Angela and Eliza and hockey playing sons Peter (Air India Western Region) and Boon (Central Railway). His funeral took place on Saturday and his cortege was laid to rest at the St. Peter’s Cemetery, Haines Road, Mahalaxmi. Photo.  For further details click here

Canada: Pradip Rodrigues: Are foreign sounding names an asset or a liability?

13 Oct: CanIndia News. … Asian-Americans tend to give their children American sounding names for practical reasons… Names should sound neutral. Take my own example, I grew up Catholic in Mumbai and my parents decided to name me Pradip an Indian name and kept my middle-name Francis to reflect my so-called identity. The reasoning was that since we lived in India it made sense to have an Indian name. When we decided to make Canada our home we didn’t give our son an Indian name but a name more reflective of the society. Thousands of South Asians immigrants and their children living in North America either go by other westernized names or are called something else by friends and work colleagues …  click here

Goa customs strike gold with gang bust
14 Oct: Times of India. The commissionerate of customs, Goa, has struck gold. Repeated individual gold busts at Dabolim airport notwithstanding, it has, for the first time, identified 10 alleged members of an organized gang that includes an Air India (AI) ramp supervisor hired on contract basis, an immigration officer and two senior staffers of a travel agency. Customs officials suspect this gang to have smuggled 225 kg of gold, valued at Rs 58 crore, during 40-odd trips to the state last year…  click here
