The real life ‘air-lift’ Goan hero in Kuwait

25 Feb: Herald. The movie Airlift has generated a lot of buzz across India. But the story of a Goan in Kuwait, who played a massive role in the events that unfolded during the invasion in the 90’s, has been creating a buzz in Goa and among the Goan Diaspora worldwide. Speaking about the 1990 invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, Carmo Santos recalls that there were at least 10,000 Indians left behind until the Gulf state was liberated on February 26, 1991. Carmo’s gallant efforts have recently made it to the news as several national publications have written about him in view of the criticism the movie received for its inaccurate portrayal of what had happened… Carmo, who lives in Kuwait is originally from Merces, Ilhas and was brought up in Panjim before he moved to Margao…  click here

Amnesty report condemns 'growing intolerance' in India

24 Feb: Economic Times. Authorities in India failed to "prevent many incidents of religious violence" and sometimes "contributed to tensions through polarising speeches", Amnesty International said as it condemned growing intolerance in the country in its annual report released today. The rights body in it its report for 2015-16 warned against worldwide assault of freedoms with many governments "brazenly" breaking international law, including an "intensified crackdown on key freedoms" in India. "Scores of artists, writers and scientists returned national honours in protest against what they said was a climate of growing intolerance," the report said in reference to India…  click here

Researchers raise Environmental issues concerning Goa at an international conference

23 Feb: Economic Times. Various environmental issues concerning Goa were highlights of a recently held international conference in Kochi where researchers discussed the ecological threats faced by the tourist coastal state. Experts from various colleges, including Government College Khandola and Ponda Education Society's College in Goa, presented papers on issues like pollution in river Mandovi and on environmental challenges in the state. The fifth international conference on Ecotoxicology and Environmental Sciences was held in Kochi between February 15-17 and was attended by over 150 delegates from the world …  click here
