Funeral Update: Joe Gonsalves

13 June 2017: Sydney Australia, JOSÉ (JOE) GONSALVES. Soccer Star and Athlete. Born 24 February 1933 (ex-Mombasa and Nairobi, Kenya). He lost a tremendous battle with Alzheimer’s. He fought so hard, long after he lost the ability to recognise family and friends. Beloved husband of Natty and father to Jocelyn, Sharlyn, Tashlyn/Joshua and grandfather to Jonah. Joe’s parents were the late Josino and Violante Gonsalves (Navelim). Brother of late Phyllis/late Francis, late Sophie/ late Walter and Monica/late Neves. Funeral arrangements: The funeral will take place on Saturday, June 17 at 11 am at Mary Mother of Mercy Chapel, Barnet Avenue, Rookwood 2141 NSW. Loving father of John Henry Holland. Will be missed by brothers Edward (Louise), Wayne (Mabel) and sister -in-law Rose (David). Will also be missed by brother-.in-law Trevor Pinto (Jean -dec), sister-in-law Penny Almeida (John). Predeceased by parents Robert Henry and Catherine and Brothers Robert (Pat), David (Rose) and Sisters Elsie Duffney (Ray) and Kay Kelly (Matt) as well as brother-in-law Sydney Pinto (Carol). So many of your fellow members fell in love with those wonderful places and their people, made their home among them and never returned. Congratulations to Mervyn Maciel, mervynels.watuwashamba@gmail.com who has had an incredibly eventful fortnight! On 23 May he attended the Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. On 12 June he participated in a Workshop at University College London discussing his experiences of serving in Kenya. Unfortunately, Elsie, his wife, is unwell and unable to accompany him. Out best wishes for her speedy recovery.

Dubai: Senior bank manager arrested for insulting Islam

15 Jun: Xpress (Dubai). A senior bank manager was arrested last week after a Muslim colleague filed a complaint accusing him of insulting Islam. E.D. from Goa, India, was taken into custody within hours of the incident at the Bur Dubai branch of a local bank on June 7. He was held at Al Raffa Police station before being released on bail. The complainant T.A., 30, from Bangalore, India, said his boss E.D. made religious slurs against him and ridiculed Islam when he asked him for leave to go to Makkah for the Umrah pilgrimage…  click here

Fringe Hindu groups meet in Goa today, agenda to turn India into ‘Hindu rashtra’ by 2023

14 Jun: Hindustan Times. Right-wing Hindu Janjagriti Samiti is holding a four-day national convention in Goa from Wednesday to push its agenda of making India a “Hindu rashtra” by 2023. “Our aim is to make India great again and this is something which can be achieved only by ensuring that it turns into a Hindu Rashtra,” claimed Ramesh Shinde, the national spokesperson of the Samiti. Around 400 delegates from across the country as well as neighbouring Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka are expected to attend the convention. The event at Ponda, the state’s industrial hub, is likely to be dominated by contentious issues like beef ban, amid a major controversy brewing in the state over the red meat…  click here

4 Merces hoodlums run riot, attack 47 Mumbai tourists

15 Jun: Navhind Times. A spat in a hotel at Merces took an ugly turn on Wednesday after four persons from the village attacked with sharp weapons a group of 47 tourists – men, women and children from Vasai, Mumbai. The locals also damaged the bus carrying the tourists while it was leaving a guesthouse at Merces. The fight left ten tourists injured and two of them, including the bus driver, sustained bone fractures. Three of the accused were also injured as the tourists subsequently overpowered and beat them up…  click here

Documentary in which virtuoso violinist Nicola Benedetti joins the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra on the trip of a lifetime - a tour of India. This film goes behind the scenes with Nicola, as she plays in Mumbai and New Delhi and experiences the country for the very first time. Nicola also takes part in workshops for local children and gives an informal performance to young children in a Mumbai municipal school.

Ian Hislop takes an entertaining, provocative look at Britain's conflicted attitudes towards immigration the decades from the Victorian Era to the First World War when modern Britain introduced its first peacetime restrictions on immigration.
