Independence notes: Different experiences in Portuguese Goa

I 17 Aug: Indian Express. … Luis de Assis Correia (89), currently a resident of Benaulim in Goa, grew up in a strict Catholic family and recounts his days of sloganeering for India’s independence and then later for organising an overseas movement for Goa’s liberation from the Portuguese… In 1958 I moved to Kenya to work for a Uganda based company. There I would often go about spreading awareness about the Goan liberation movement. When Goa attained Independence in 1961 I was still in Kenya. We rejoiced there but I could not come home since I still held a Portuguese passport. However, the liberation of Goa did not make me happy. The people who came to power, the so called freedom fighters, forced out all educated Goans…”  click here

Libia Lobo Sardesai: India: 70 years of independence

14 Aug: The National (Dubai). India has undoubtedly achieved much since breaking free of the British. But it has still not fulfilled its essential duty of uniting its citizens… Libia Lobo Sardesai, 91, now lives in Goa, but in 1947, she was at university in Bombay. Her father was away working in Kenya … “In Bombay, we lived in Dhobi Talao … There were three days of grand celebrations for independence… Our family always thought we belonged in Goa, not in Bombay… I became a freedom-fighter. On the day Goa was liberated I was the one who made the announcement on radio. That very day also, I moved back to Goa… In retrospect, I feel that Goa was more beautiful when it was undeveloped. I’m quite disillusioned with what has happened since then…  click here

EU citizens will be free to visit the UK after Brexit without having to obtain visas, it has emerged… But that does not mean EU citizens will have the automatic right to stay indefinitely, the sources said on Thursday. If they want to work in the UK, they will need to comply with new migration restrictions… sources denied a claim in a report in the Times saying that the new system would involve a set number of work permits being issued for EU workers coming to the UK to work in particular employment sectors…  click here

Christians in Pakistan and India mark 70 years of independence facing hardships

15 Aug: Ecumenical News (USA). From the beginning of their independence from Britain, both Pakistan and India have promised to respect the rights of religious minorities, and recognize the equal citizenship of the believers of all faiths.
