The business of getting married

27 Oct: Herald. With the major wedding season in Goa almost upon us, Café looks at the trend of getting married in Goa, and all that it entails from a planner’s viewpoint … Ever since the domestic market discovered the pleasure of saying ones vows on the beaches of Goa, the skill levels of Goan wedding planners have improved drastically. Many have no problem looking beyond the shores of Goa to hire services of entertainers or expertise for designing sets… Clients are coming in from locations as diverse as Dubai, Singapore, Zambia, UK, and most of them are of Indian descent… A large number of the big wedding planners in the state only organise weddings for domestics or NRI’s and will not touch local weddings, because the budgets are not large enough…  click here

Archbishop in India concerned ‘Amoris Laetitia’ doesn’t discuss interreligious marriage

26 Oct: Crux. By Nirmala Carvalho. Although Amoris Laetitia has caused controversy over what it says - or doesn’t say - about divorced and remarried people receiving Communion, one archbishop in India is pointing to an area that he says the papal document on marriage and family life has almost entirely ignored. Archbishop Felix Machado of Vasai said he was “disappointed” the document didn’t really discuss interfaith marriages - where one of the parties isn’t baptized - adding he “expected some clear light” on the subject. “However, I find only a passing mention made about the phenomena of the increasing number of interreligious marriages,” Machado said during a symposium on Amoris Laetitia in the context of India held in Mumbai from October 13-15…  click here

Attack on Swiss couple is not the message India should be sending to tourists

27 Oct: Daily O. The recent attack on a Swiss couple at Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh has once again raised questions on whether India is a friendly and safe destination for foreign tourists… Early in October, tourism minister KJ Alphons said that India is one of the safest countries in the world and "stories" of the nation being unsafe for foreign tourists are "exaggerated"… According to an RTI reply accessed by a local activist in support of relatives of the victims, a shocking 245 foreigners have died in Goa in the last 12 years… The livelihood of a very large number of people in the country is linked to the tourism industry. It is imperative that we make this country safer for those who come to see and admire its beauty.  click here

Hanging out on Goa airport’s runway: Dogs, birds, pythons

26 Oct: Times of India. By Newton Sequeira. The presence of stray dogs and birds around Goa's sole airport at Dabolim is worrying authorities, especially since the airfield is critical for domestic as well as military purposes. Even though animal strikes are few and far between, they certainly pose a constant threat to Goa International Airport's operations… Sources said that stray dogs often ventured into the airport area through gratings in the compound wall and storm water drains that are meant to release surface run off water. In once instance, there was even a python on the runway. A circular issued by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) warns that presence of wildlife such as birds and animals near an airport poses a serious threat to aircraft operational safety. New Zealand: A day in the life of Neill Rea

28 Oct: Dominion Post – Your Weekend, Page 6. Actor and casting director Neill Rea plays a leading role in The Brokenwood Mysteries, the Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Shepherd. Rea, who is in his mid-40s, is pictured aged 20, on the beach in Goa, India, on a holiday following his second year at university… Me and a mate went to Goa … The photo kind of reminds me of a carefree younger self, but when everything was probably also more chaotic and dangerous, I think. When we first got to Goa, we'd gone to a bar at the seaside and I'd met the kind of quintessential ageing American hippie, who was drinking a beer and smoking what I thought were "bindis" - vine leaf tobacco rolls - and he kind of offered it to me as I was chatting to him. It was hash and baccy… The other thing that photo reminds me of is, I need to do some yoga… The new series of The Brokenwood Mysteries begins on Prime on October 29 at 8.30pm.  click here
28 Oct: Dominion Post – Your Weekend, Page 19: Restaurant Review. Visit to WBC restaurant: “As a spicy version of Pacific Island-style marinated raw fish, Goan Raw Fish Curry is a great concept, even if in the execution it seemed to me the raw edges of cardamom and turmeric could have been tempered with more heat. After years of eating sashimi, I would have preferred the fish had spent less time in the marinade – but that’s just me…  click here
