Obituary

Death: Nelson Monteiro

2 Dec. London UK. NELSON MONTEIRO, (ex-Mombasa) son of the late Manoel & late Ana Rita Monteiro, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 years. Beloved husband of Bertha, loving father of Malcolm (Laura), dearly beloved grandfather of Noah. Brother of: Tarsila (late Cajetan), late Theo (Genny), late Marcello (Cathy), Theodora (Polly) and Clare. The funeral will be held on Monday 18 December 2017 at 11.00am at St Margaret Clitherow Catholic Church, Everglade Strand, Grahame Park, London, NW9 5PX (By road: turn into Great Strand, opposite the RAF Museum, and Everglade is the at the end of the road on the left. Closest Tube Station is Colindale). Private cremation for immediate family only to follow funeral service. Thereafter, the wake will be at Kingsbury Services Club, 247 Stag Lane, Kingsbury, London NW9 0EF (entrance gate next to the Kingsbury Fitness & Wellbeing Centre). A coach will leave Colindale Station at 10.30am for the Church and from there to the hall after the service. Daughter of Zenaida/ late Francisco Viegas. Sister/ sister-in-law of Nelsey/ Constancio Godinho, Sima/ Newton Gomes (U.K.), Liberata/ late Paschal Alvares, Funeral will held in London on 11.12.2017. There will be Eucharistic Celebration for the departed soul on 11.12.2017 at 8.15am at St. Andrew, Church, Vasco da Gama.

Iron Ore From Paradise Wins No Takers as China Upends Market

8 Dec: Bloomberg. A China-led flight to quality in the global iron ore market is punishing producers of the lower-grade material, with miners in India facing an increasing battle to find buyers for their cargoes as demand dwindles. In Goa, exporters are struggling to sell even a quarter of what they shipped last year, according to Glenn Kalavampara, secretary at the Goa Mineral Ore Exporters’ Association. “There’s absolutely no market,” he said by phone from Panaji, capital of the western state that’s better known for its sparkling beach resorts. “The preference for higher-grade ore is a major concern.” he said…  click here

British national, wanted in child abuse case, arrested in Goa, challenges extradition proceedings

10 Dec: Zee News. A 73-year-old British national, wanted in a child abuse and trafficking case in the Philippines, has moved the Delhi High Court challenging the proceedings in a trial court to extradite him to that country… Lennox James Ellis was arrested from Goa on June 9 last year on the basis of a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol at the behest of the Philippines government. Ellis has been lodged in Tihar Jail since July 11 last year where he was sent after being incarcerated in a Goa jail for over a month…  click here

Import paradise: Vintage cars in Goa

10 Dec: Autocar. In the period is from 1947 to December 1961 a Goan could import any car from anywhere in the world… Affordable cars like the Austin Cambridge, Volkswagen Beetle, Ford Consul, Mercedes 180 and Morris Oxford made up the bulk of the sales numbers. Their prices ranged from Rs 8,000 to 15,000. The elite, on the other hand, preferred larger brands like Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac, Chrysler, Oldsmobile and Lincoln, whose prices ranged from Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000… The Governor-General of Goa was chauffeured around in a black Cadillac Fleetwood Series 75… Interestingly, some of cars that were imported in the 1947-1961 period are in the unique position of being the foremost examples of their kind in India today… A majority of Goans, however, relied on public transportation. Goa exported 840 tonnes of shrimp in 2016

India is the leader in prawn production and is also the largest exporter of prawns in the world said union minister for agriculture, farmers' welfare and fisheries, Radha Mohan Singh… "The country earned more than 5.78 billion US dollars foreign exchange equating to Rs 37,871 crore in the financial year 2016-17 through the exports of fish and fishery products," he said.
