Canada: Mervin Mascarenhas: Bringing luxury to writing!

7 Feb: The Goan. Everyone loves the posh life… any item can be transformed into a high-end luxury commodity -even a pen-as is shown by Mervin Mascarenhas, a Goan entrepreneur, currently based out of Canada, who has created a $90,000 pen. The pen is made using parts of a meteorite that had fallen on earth from outer space, and is embellished with 18 carat gold and diamonds… A major source of inspiration for this product was the seas and landscape of Bermuda, where Mascarenhas lived for close to a decade. “After studies, I began to work on a cruise ship, and one of its ports was Bermuda. I loved the island, and decided to stay there,” he elaborates…  click here

Raising a toast to feni

7 Feb: the Hindu. Goa has just got the world’s first feni cellar. Started by Hansel Vaz, founder of Cazulo Premium Feni, this initiative is his attempt to preserve Goa’s heritage and make a case for feni the world over… Beco das Garrafas is situated in the foothills of Cansaulim. As you enter the space, you are embraced by the aroma of cashew fruits, spice trees and the fresh salty air… The pretty cellar is surrounded by around 1200 garrafas (bottles), in every imaginable shape, size and colour. These large-bellied, hand-blown glass bottles, were brought by ship from Europe to India back in the 1600s. Sadly, these are not even made any more. Which is why Hansel has been really keen on collecting and preserving them… Beco das Garrafas organises cellar visits during weekends. It’s priced at ₹2,000 per person, or you could even do a private visit if you are a large group of 20 or more. For details, log on to www.cazulofeni.com  click here
7 Feb: The Hindu. Got The Sniffles? In Goa, many locals prefer feni to medicines for cough and cold. It is believed that feni warms up the body and cleanses the respiratory system…

It’s time for Ola, Uber to come to Goa

7 Feb: Governance Now. By Vishwas Dass. Famous for its scenic beaches and a blend of Indo-Portuguese culture, Goa is a favourite destination for tourists – Indians and foreigners alike. But the state which draws so many tourists every year offers a dismal transportation facility. The capital city of Panaji has very less government-owned buses to ferry passengers to some prominent tourist destinations. Cashing on this, private taxi operators and auto-rickshaw drivers charge exorbitant money from the tourists… When I asked Goa's assistant director of transport (headquarters) Rajesh Naik over phone about this he said that Ola and Uber have never approached the government of Goa and the sector is always open for them… I booked a cab from GoaMiles app from Dabolim Airport to Panaji (around 25 kms) which charged me around Rs 720-800 as compared to Rs 1,050-1,100 a private taxi would have charged… 686 words.  click here

Traffic sentinels: Good watchdogs or interfering ‘spies’?

7 Feb: Herald. Last week, a middle aged man stood by the footpath of the parking area at Kamat Restaurant, near Immaculate Conception church, and began clicking pictures of few riders passing by without a helmet and illegal nameplates. Displeased by the act, the mini shop keepers and pedestrians around the area passed slang remarks and threatened to beat him up… This gives rise to several questions. Is this behaviour acceptable for a person whois trying to save a life? Is the department not capable enough to do their own work? Or are the sentinels, according to some, ‘interfering in people’s private lives’…  click here

A Russian became a blockbuster actor in Bollywood

7 Feb: Bash News (Russia). A tourist from Bashkiria, Alexander Aidarov, quite accidentally became an actor of the blockbuster, who was filmed at a "dream factory" in India. A resident of Sterlitamak went to Goa for a holiday, but suddenly found himself on the set. According to him, many Russians thus earn extra money in a foreign land… he was offered to make money on the filming of action-packed action movie. So the man turned out to be a supporting actor in Bollywood - the Indian counterpart of American Hollywood. Alexander notes: the production of films in India is treated with great fanaticism, the scale of the scenery is amazing, and make-up artists even work on supporting actors for hours. The most pleasant moment: they pay very well for it… The bandits in the film are usually played by stocky and strong men. This texture is very well suited by Europeans and Russians. Alexander notes: in addition to money, on the set very well fed …  click here
