COVID-19: Dr Egidio da Silva: Pop-up virus isolation 'bubbles' invented in Birmingham, UK

8 Apr: Birmingham Live. A team of university experts and hospital medics has developed a tool to enable doctors and nurses to quickly form a workable protective barrier, like a bubble, around a coronavirus patient before carrying out life-saving procedures … Specialists at the University of Birmingham and Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Egidio da Silva from the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital recognised that it can take up to seven minutes to apply full PPE from the time a patient arrives on a ward, which can leave medics exposed to airborne droplets putting them at risk of contracting the virus… The team wants to get the Aerosol Shield into the hands of those who need it most by enabling the hospitals to trial them without the delay of a buying process… 839 words. More compassion required to seafarers, NRIs & migrants

20 Apr: Goa News, By Cleofato Almeida Coutinho (Photo). A storm is brewing over about 7000 to 8000 Goan seafarers stranded due to Coronavirus lockdown. About 1.6 million seafarers including 40000 Indian crew members are unable to leave their ships. The problem is seafarers are not treated as other international key workers like airline crew and medical professionals and as such not exempted from travel bans … the Goa government did little to convince the Centre over Goa’s capacity to quarantine the sailors after they are repatriated. The Ports Minister Michael Lobo was clear that Goa does not have capacity to quarantine even 100 sailors…  click here

The Last Prabhu, a story from Aldona

21 Apr: Navhind Times. By Frederick Noronha. Ten years ago, Bernardo Elivino de Souza met me at a local hotel and spoke about his plans to come out with a book on his experiences with tracing his roots. As someone keenly aware of how little we ourselves understand Goan society, the idea immediately seemed appealing to me. That book got published. Ten years later, another online version - revised quite thoroughly - of 'The Last Prabhu' emerged for online sale, via Amazon.com. If you're wondering what this intriguingly-titled book is all about, take a moment to read its sub-title. It labels itself: "A hunt for roots: DNA, ancient documents and migration in Goa." To put it briefly, this is a book of tracing roots… 1057 words.  click here

While thousands of people will return to work, police are set to strictly enforce social distancing measures. Also, starting Monday, every person who leaves the house has to compulsorily wear a mask, and violators will be fined. The relaxations only apply to those going to work. The lockdown continues to operate for all others, especially senior citizens… chicken and fish will not be permitted to be sold in the state’s markets, but vendors would be allowed to offer home delivery…  click here

Air India stops bookings after aviation minister’s advice

21 Apr: Civil Aviation. Air India has stopped taking bookings on all flights, said its officials, a day after Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri “advised” airlines to open bookings only after the government takes a decision on resuming passenger flights. The minister’s comment came on Saturday night, hours after the national carrier stated that it has opened bookings on select domestic flights from May 4 and on select international flights from June 1 … Several passengers have complained on social media that Indian airlines are not giving refunds for flights cancelled due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown and instead issuing credit vouchers for future travel…  click here

'Ghastly, never again' – the world's worst holiday destinations, according to you

20 Apr: The Telegraph (UK). This week, we published a selection of readers' comments … India: Some travellers swear this is the best place in the world. But it's a country that divides opinion.
George Dunn: "The most overrated tourist destination that I have visited was India. Romanticised beyond belief (principally by the English middle classes and the BBC), it revels in the lack of sanitation and basic hygiene.
Marcus Reece: "No privacy, dignity, hygiene, democracy, equality.
Terry Farrell: "Goa is the Bognor Regis of India."
Dave Clement: "Noisy, congested, filthy, plus awful food.  click here
