Obituary

Death: Sebastian Fernandes. Ex Nairobi.

11 Jul. North London. SEBASTIAN ANTHONY FERNANDES. Aged 79. It is with much sadness that we share this news of the sudden passing today of Sebastian Anthony Fernandes. Son of the late Conceicâo Thomas and Zeferina Fernandes, brother of the late Xavier (the late Sandra), the late Ignatius, the late Inacine, Anastasia (the late Robert), the late Remetina (Walter), Antoinette (Alan) and Agnelo (Dores). A proud Goan with strong family values, he is survived by his wife Rose (nee Da Silva) and will be greatly missed by his children Carl (Davina), Colin (Mandha), Cheryl (Runako), Charles (Angie). He doted on his grandchildren Jayden, Kyran and Jenna and all his nieces and nephews. Seby, regularly and fondly reminisced about his happy childhood and youth in Mungul (Goa). He was a NAAFI stalwart and a member of the Nairobi Goan Tailors Society, Crusaders FC and Goan Institute. He was always proudly prominent in the Mungul Union (UK), the North London Goans & Simba FC. 9 Jul: Gibsonton, Florida, USA. MRS MARY ANTAO. Edward Antao sadly and sorrowfully announces the passing away of his adorable and dear wife - Mrs. Mary Antao, in Florida. Edward now residing in Florida, hailed from Pemba and Zanzibar, an ex. student of St. Joseph's Convent School in Zanzibar. Edward is the brother of, Anthony "Tony” (Amita), John, Philomena (Anton), Late Augustine, and Late Loudino. Beloved father of, Jennifer and Jessica (Charles). Grandfather to Kaeden. Funeral interment will be held as soon as arrangements are finalized. Please seek details of Funeral rites from immediate family member. Burial will take place in Davenport, Iowa. Lifetime Achievement Award: Dr Agnelo Fernandes

10 Jul: Croydon Medical Society. Agnelo Fernandes was born in Goa, went to school in Wandsworth, South London and attended King’s College, London and Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School. His interests include minor surgery, dermatology, teaching and quality improvement of health services through innovation and transformation. A GP at Parchmore Medical Centre in Thornton Heath, Croydon for 30 years he is also a GP Trainer … He was awarded the MBE for “services to Medicine and Healthcare” by Her Majesty the Queen (2004) becoming the first Croydon GP to have received this honour, and Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners (2006) … 1102 words.  click here

Leicester factory put lives at risk during lockdown, claims garment worker

Exclusive: amid allegations of production continuing behind closed doors, regulators have clamped down in the city … The Guardian has heard accounts from dozens of interviews with workers, family members, factory bosses, community figures and pressure groups. Some even told the Guardian they were aware of cases where workers’ employment or identity documents were held by factory bosses, leaving them unable to seek employment elsewhere… For the authorities in Leicester, there are challenges to taking action against a problem that they broadly accept is serious… 1522 words.  click here

Chess: How Leon Mendonca is chasing a Grand Master norm in Europe

10 Jul: ESPN (USA). Leon Mendonca is perhaps the only Indian chess player on the planet right now who's flitting between countries for regular over-the-board tournaments. It's been at least five months since the 14-year-old International Master (IM) from Goa has been home. Leon and his father Lyndon were stranded in Budapest for three months after being denied boarding on their flight back to India on March 18 following the nationwide lockdown announcement. Another member of the family has been facing a particularly challenging last few months due to the pandemic -- Lyndon's wife is a doctor serving on the frontline. She has been pulling extensive work hours at the virology laboratory of Goa Medical College and Hospital that tests several hundreds of samples daily… Leon is also chasing a GM norm (he'll need to win three norms to be titled a GM)… Cooking is a skill Lyndon picked up after he quit his job (as an engineer) six years ago to be able to accompany Leon to tournaments…  click here

Is That Goa Holiday A Good Idea?

11 Jul: Outlook. Perhaps not yet. The state government has just ordered a crackdown on all parties and public gatherings, both indoors and outdoors. Though the state has opened up for tourists, the state government has put strict restrictions on indoor or outdoor gatherings. The announcement from the Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant came after a video of BJP MLA Glenn Ticlo hosting a party that went viral ,,, The CM has ordered a strict crackdown on people found hanging out in groups in open public places. People are even urged to stay in their houses as much as possible and avoid visiting neighbours or friends…  click here
