Pedro Lazaro Leitao: Goan who escaped Idi Amin, turns 103 on Tuesday

20 Feb: Times of India. There is no walking stick in the Leitao home in Varca, Goa … Pedro Lazaro had a narrow escape from Idi Amin’s brutal regime in Uganda in the 70s. He played football, tennis, badminton and billiards, loves his whisky, and loves his sweets … In all of his years, ‘Lazarine bhav’, as he’s known, has spent a grand total of one day in hospital… his wife, Alice is 88 and he has 15 grandchildren … At his home in Varca, Goa, Pedro reminisces about his miraculous escape from East Africa when president Idi Amin ordered the expulsion of Uganda’s Asian minority… In 1979 they left Uganda with a few belongings… 705 words  click here

Varca murder: Daughter arrested on charges of killing her father Trinidade Martins

21 Feb: Herald. Seventy-two hours after 80-year-old Varca resident Trinidade Martins was bludgeoned to death with iron rods at his home on Thursday evening, his reportedly estranged married daughter, was arrested by the Colva Police on charges of murdering her father … Team Herald had picked this angle upon its very first visit to the area when it was doing its own investigation and putting the pieces together… Police suspect that the murder might have taken place over property matters however, so far there is no strong evidence…  click here

Women Writer’s Prize 2021: Selma Carvalho’s ‘Sisterhood of Swans’ shortlisted

18 Feb: SheThePeople. The prize announcement came after seven years of Women Writers Fest organised by SheThePeople, putting the spotlight on literary contributions of women writers… Six books are on the shortlist including Sisterhood of Swans by Selma Carvalho… Carvalho’s novel is the coming-of-age story of a girl named Anna-Marie Souza who lives in a suburb of London. Her parents migrated there from Bombay before Anna-Marie was born… Selma Carvalho is an award-winning author who has explored themes of migration and memory in her fiction and non-fiction works… 1176 words  click here

Eastbourne jazz - Shireen Francis set for the stage

17 Feb: Sussex Express (UK). Spokeswoman Annette Keen said: “Singer Shireen Francis has developed her own unique blend of jazz with flavours of gospel, blues, calypso and reggae. Born in London of Jamaican and Goan heritage, Shireen initially learned her craft in Afro-Caribbean music. However she soon moved into jazz singing and writing her own material… she has performed at top international venues and festivals, including Ronnie Scott’s, Royal Festival Hall, Royal Albert Hall, 606 Club and Pizza Express Dean Street… The venue is the Fishermen’s Club, Royal Parade, BN22 7AA. Shireen’s mother, Bonaventura Menezes was born in Chinchimin Goa on 14 Jul. 1927, schooled in Nairobi then moved to Pakistan and came to UK in 1948. Go, Gold, Goa: Researchers find traces of gold in iron ore deposits

20 Feb: India TV. In a discovery which has the potential to make Goa's beleaguered mining industry stand up and take notice, a study conducted by Goa University has revealed traces of gold in the iron ore harvested and exported for decades from the mining pits in the coastal state... The study conducted by researchers Sujata Dabolkar and Dr Nandakumar Kamat has revealed gold concentration ranges from 7.71-13 parts per million indicating the auriferous (containing gold) nature of Goa's iron ore… A research paper has been published by the duo in the latest edition of the Journal of Geosciences Research … Mining exploration for iron ore in Goa began in the Portuguese era, when a cash-strapped Portuguese empire allocated mining leases to its colonial subjects in Goa … Several hundred mining leases were allotted to local residents out of which nearly 100 were in operation until 2012… 583 words  click here

Kamat and Dabolkar say they collected vermicasts from mining and non-mining areas, which were later dried, sieved and powdered. Although ‘feni’ currently has a cult following, ‘urrak’ was also a ‘hot’ favourite back in the day… urrak is the mother of feni and needs to be recognized as well… There are natural yeasts on ripe cashew ‘apples’ that make the juice ferment spontaneously. Seraphim Felicio was a prisoner of war in Goa in 1961

19 Feb: Correio da Manhã. (Portugal). Serafim Felício left Lisbon in May 1959, on the ship ‘Niassa’. In the first two years he took care of the water and gunpowder deposits and was made guard of honour to the silver casket in which rests St. Francis Xavier remains… However, he trained and joined the security forces… On the day of the invasion, December 18, 1961, when the shelling began, his unit was ordered to withdraw… Taken prisoner, Seraphim was sent to the Altinho camp. He was also in Aguada, a civil prison, and in Pondá… "If people moved or made some more aggressive gesture, we were threatened with machine guns. The Sikhs were terrible and always pointed guns at us … Seraphim survived and withstood the harshness of captivity, isolation, barbed wire and starvation. ”Suffering is eternal,” he says, 60 years later, recalling that the arrival in Lisbon, in May 1962, was not easy either…
