News Summary

From Eddie Fernandes, Editor of Goan Voice 1.0

This is the last issue of Goan Voice I have put together. Thank you to the readers for sustaining me and to Vivek Menezes for taking it over. Long Live Goan Voice 2.0!

From Vivek Menezes, Editor of Goan Voice 2.0 This publication helmed with such dedication and grace by Eddie Fernandes, has long been one of my favourite places on the Internet. Even before the Google age we now live in, it searched the far vestiges of the World Wide Web for connections to Goa with tremendous acumen and resourcefulness, and that trait has persisted with remarkable consistency throughout the years. You always read the most interesting news and views here first, which is an important legacy to carry forward even if its great founder-editor insists it's time for him to stop. It's my pleasure to confirm Goan Voice will resume everyday presence later this year, after some weeks hiatus to reorganize. Please join me in an old-fashioned three cheers to Eddie Fernandes for the amazing achievement of so many years. Viva! Deu borem korum

Swindon: Row over plan for Goan community centre at Medina nightclub

30 Mar: Swindon Advertiser. By Aled Thomas. Before May 2023, Conservative councillors were enthusiastic about the prospects of turning the old Medina nightclub into a community centre for people of Goan heritage. One of those members, Councillor Anabelle Pegado, said: "Officers agreed to commission a condition survey to find out exactly what needed to be done to the building and how much money would be required for renovations before we made a final decision.” But when Labour came to power a year ago, leader of the council Councillor Jim Robbins poured cold water on the idea saying the building was not suitable. He said it is not accessible to those who have mobility problems, there is no parking allocated to it, although it is near a council pay and display car park, and the building is damaged by water ingress, contains asbestos and is vermin-infested. Now Tory councillors are trying to put pressure on the administration to revive the idea. .. Cllr Robbins said: “Misleading comments from Conservative councillors just ahead of the elections are just shameless electioneering, and sadly typical of last year’s antics.” 604 words.  click here
