London: Train rant woman cleared of racism
26 Sep: London 24. A commuter who told an Asian man to “f*** off back to your own country” in a drunken rant on the Tube has been found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment. Claire Moloney, of Western Avenue, Dagenham, was filmed by another passenger on the train who uploaded the clip onto YouTube… Moloney, who works as an accountant, said she was “mortified” at her language but claimed it was a reaction to the man “insulting” her own country… “He said something about blood on my hands for invading his country. He took offence to me wearing a poppy. It was against women in general and he definitely used the word ‘slag’. “I was drunk. He was insulting me and my country. I lost it. I felt threatened, I was on my own, I was the only woman in the carriage and I wanted to come across like I wasn’t scared.” … Police were unable to trace the victim, any other passenger on the carriage or the person who uploaded the video onto YouTube…  click here

Tony Fernandes expects AirAsia India to post profit in first year of operations

28 Sep: Economic Times. Malaysian carrier AirAsia's chief Tony Fernandes on Saturday said that he expects its Indian subsidiary to post profit in the first year of operations. "Superb co-operation between partners. I'm confident we will make profit in first year. And change aviation." Fernandes posted from a verified account on social networking site Twitter. AirAsia India, which will likely start flying from January, is expected to bring in attractive fares in a market where ticket prices are currently at record highs, which would help the carrier eke in profits…  click here

Keith Vaz hits the right notes at Labour's party conference
28 Sep: Daily Express (UK). The surprise hit of Labour conference was Keith Vaz. During several sessions the Leicester East MP chaired the proceedings with a dry sense of humour that reduced many delegates to fits of giggles and prevented single issue fanatics from derailing the agenda. Football: Dominic Soares [ex-Tanzania]: The wizard of dribbling no more

28 Sep: Herald. … Dominic Soares, 68, who formed part the most lethal strike force of Andrew, Bernard, Catao, famously came to be known as the ABCD of Goan football, succumbed to a massive cardiac failure at his residence. He was to pick up his wife Theresa from the airport, who was returning from Dubai, after spending time with her daughter and son there… Saligao-born Dominic started his career with Young Rovers in Tanzania where his family had migrated in the early sixties… he was treated as God and would be lifted around by fans whenever Vasco played… Dominic is survived by his 89-yead-old mother Rosie, wife Theresa, daughter Tracy Remidios (Dubai), Tanya D’Souza (London), sons Terence (Bengaluru) and Titus (Dubai). Body will be brought directly to St. Ines Church (Panjim) for Eucharistic celebration on Sunday, 29 Sept. at 3pm followed by burial at St. Ines cemetery.

UK: Indian High Commission returns to typewriters

The Indian High Commission in London has reverted to using typewriters to compose sensitive documents in the wake of the NSA spying scandal…Officials also apparently step out of the embassy's premises in Aldwych to discuss sensitive matters in order to dodge 'dedicated' satellites and possible bugs installed on the premises… "Top secret cables are now written on typewriters which cannot be tracked" Indian High Commissioner to London Jamini Bhagwati …  click here

Nairobi: Westgate Mall and Holy Family Basilica were on the terrorist list

28 Sep: The Nation (Kenya). Kenya was warned that al-Shabaab terrorists were planning a Mumbai-style attack in Nairobi and Mombasa on September 13 and 20. The report said terrorists planned to storm a building with guns and grenades and “probably hold hostages”… The attack on Westgate, which is owned by an Israeli, followed similar warnings from Israel to the Kenya government. The Israelis said terrorists were planning to attack premises owned by its citizens during the Jewish holidays between September 4 and 28… According to the intelligence situation report, Westgate and Holy Family Basilica (Photo - by Selma Carvalho) in Nairobi had been flagged for attack early this year. The report names Sheikh Abdiwelli Mohammed and Sheikh Hussein Hassan as the masterminds. “They are believed to... have already surveyed the two targets,” says the report…  click here
